Job Summary:

The Field Supervisor oversees the CARES department’s safety and security operations during an assigned shift and supervision of Community Safety Officers. This position involves both supervisory responsibilities of Community Safety Officers, Access Attendants and Dispatchers, and the execution of safety and security duties, maintaining order, enforcing rules, responding to emergencies, and performing executive/close protection duties as directed by competent authority. The Field Supervisor is a visible and proactive presence who leads security staff, monitors public safety, and supports college operations—particularly during times when no other supervisory personnel are present.

Job Description:

Core Responsibilities:

Private Detail and Security Duties may include, but not be limited to:

  • Conduct foot and/or vehicle patrols (interior and exterior).
  • Control access/egress at campus and building entry points.
  • Monitor CCTV, fire/life safety, and intrusion alarm systems.
  • Deter and report criminal activity, policy violations, or safety risks.
  • Safeguard persons and property against fire, theft, vandalism, or other threats.
  • Conduct advance site assessments and route planning to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Provide close personal protection and maintain constant vigilance during all movements.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement, event security, and transportation teams.·

Supervisory & Administrative Duties:

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of shift staff.
  • Respond to and manage all safety, security, or facilities issues during assigned shifts.
  • Conduct random inspections of posts and facilities to assess readiness and compliance.
  • Provide coaching, training, and progressive discipline as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with internal departments and external partners (e.g., NYPD, FDNY).
  • Ensure incident reporting and documentation is accurate and timely.
  • Stay familiar with campus operations to anticipate and respond to safety concerns.
  • Use systems such as Lenel for access control and incident reporting.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Regulatory Requirements & Certifications:

  • Complete or possess a minimum of 180 hours of training and complete all annual recertification requirements.
  • Maintain all required certifications such as:
    • New York State Licensure (or acquire within 6 months)
    • CPR, First Aid, AED
    • Fire & Life Safety Director Certification (or acquire within 1 year)
    • NY State-issued Driver's License in good standing

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong customer service and communication skills; ability to handle crises calmly and efficiently.
  • Understanding of community policing principles and ability to build inclusive team dynamics.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Docs, and security software platforms.
  • Able to manage conflict, make unbiased decisions under stress, and write clear incident reports.
  • Comfortable testifying in hearings and engaging with legal procedures.
  • Physically able to walk/stand for long and extended periods of time in various weather conditions; climb stairs; demonstrate agility and ability to move quickly and swiftly around the campus and perimeter; lift 25+ pounds and demonstrate ability to exert themselves in situations requiring bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting and other mobility necessary to complete the essential functions of the job.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years in security/law enforcement, including 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Must maintain a valid, clean NYS driver’s license.
  • Must be currently certified, or eligible and willing to obtain a minimum of 180 hours of training
  • Resident of the City of New York
  • If discharged from the military service, it shall not have been dishonorably; may be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Strong judgment, physical fitness, and situational awareness.
  • Ability to travel and work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in campus or educational security.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards (Clery, Title IX, ADA).
  • Prior experience supervising unionized security staff.
  • Military service, especially in law enforcement or security-related roles.
  • Graduate of a Certified Public Safety Academy.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or public safety.
  • Prior experience in executive protection, law enforcement, or military security.

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
