Reporting to the SVP, Chief Information & Digital Officer (CIDO), the VP, Chief of Applications is responsible for all aspects of the enterprise applications portfolio that support the overall missions of Stanford Health Care (SHC) and Stanford Medicine. This includes strategic planning, defining the investment mix, overseeing the portfolio structure, executive communications and accountability for implementations and software operations.

The VP, Chief of Applications is a strategic partner to senior business, operations, and clinical leaders of the health system, charged with aligning software investments to create value for these business units, patients, and customers. The role will align closely with other members of the Technology & Digital Solutions (TDS) leadership team to integrate applications with infrastructure, analytics, facilities programs, informatics, data science, research technologies, etc.

The VP, Chief of Applications is the principle executive contact for key technology partners to maintain alignment with SHC goals. They will work with the CIDO and TDS leadership team to ensure that projects are aligned with clinical and business strategies and objectives. The VP will also be involved with SHC joint ventures that rely on technology to support new businesses.

The VP, Chief of Applications also provides executive oversight and leadership to the TDS applications teams ensuring that systems and processes are well integrated and comprehensively improve stakeholder return on investment. This role is responsible for ensuring that TDS priorities are aligned with SHC's strategic priorities and goals and has direct responsibility for core platforms. This includes but is not limited to overseeing capital & operating budgets, risk management, strategic alignment of IT investments, demand management, and standardization of enterprise investments in technology.

What you will do

  • Executive leadership of the applications portfolio to meet high level business objectives.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop senior leaders to oversee applications teams resulting in strong employee engagement.
  • Collaborate with key business executives and clinical leaders to promote enterprise technology strategies and goals.
  • Collaboratively execute governance and portfolio management processes to ensure stakeholder engagement, consensus on prioritization, effective resource management, and functional accountability through all phases of an initiative’s lifecycle.
  • Establish strategic alignment by linking TDS application strategies with SHC’s business imperatives.
  • Be a trusted partner to the CIDO in all areas of the enterprise by giving good counsel and advocating for technology strategies.
  • Represent SHC and TDS at national and global conferences as an expert in the field and to advocate for SHC interests. This includes speaking engagements and potential volunteer opportunities in professional organizations at senior levels.
  • Provide guidance to SHC ventures that may include new applications development.
  • Continue to advance SHC’s preeminent position in clinical care, cutting edge research and training the next generation of clinical leaders.
  • Oversee robust financial management processes for long range planning and forecasting and fostering quality and fiscal accountability for projects.
  • Set strategy with contracting teams to ensure new application agreements meet SHC standards.
  • Serve as a hospital administrator on call as part of a weekly rotation schedule with other senior leaders.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university.
  • Relevant advanced degree preferred.

Experience Qualifications

  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related executive level leadership experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Unique combination of operational expertise, business process management principles (and strategic planning to drive operational effectiveness).
  • Expert level understanding of contemporary clinical, business & revenue cycle applications and portfolio management.
  • A strong understanding of artificial intelligence and how the technology can be used to improve clinical and business outcomes.
  • Ability to lead effectively and influence other executives to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, industry peers and vendors.
  • Ability to negotiate, plan and organize, analyze and resolve problems.
  • Ability to succeed in demanding situations by balancing demands for new technology and maintain a high level of service with existing systems.
  • Ability to oversee complex projects and resources (people, costs, and time) across multiple departments.
  • Ability to mediate and resolve complex problems and issues.
  • Ability to collaborate in complex team-based environments.
  • Deep knowledge of functional departments in health care and demonstrated ability to lead large-scale complex IT projects to successful conclusions.
  • Deep knowledge of information technology disciplines e.g., network operations, databases, software application and interfaces, computer operations, production control, quality assurance and systems management.
  • Keen interest in developing/deploying cutting edge technologies that will advance the mission of SHC and bring prominence to the organization.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management in health care.
  • Expert level understating of enterprise governance & project management.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $140.00 - $185.19 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
