Job Summary

Providers continuous observation of central cardiac monitors. Performs receptionist and clerical activities on the patient care department. Provides patient services for the adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. Supports and participates in continuous quality improvement activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Recognizes and documents cardiac dysrhythmias and notifies registered nurse immediately of any change
  • Documents rhythms on each patient as directed.
  • Keeps log of patients’ status and rhythms and reports to oncoming Monitor Technician.
  • Documents continuous rhythm strips during a Code.
  • Receives, greets and directs patients, visitor and hospital personnel.
  • Receives requests from patients and families and refers requests to appropriate staff.
  • Receives, places and transfers calls using appropriate telephone etiquette.
  • Initiates, assembles and maintains medical records for all patients on the assigned department.
  • Transcribes physicians’ orders. Completes all forms, requisitions, computer verifications and communications necessary to implement orders.
  • Utilizes computer to enter patient admission data, change orders, requisition supplies and generate/receive interdepartmental communications.
  • Maintains patient kardex and medication administration record. Records information on clinical graphic form.
  • Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in patients’ medical records after review by RN.
  • Prepares and processes medical records for transfer within the hospital and to other facilities.
  • Prepares discharge charts for Medical Records Department.
  • Records and communicates messages.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of forms, materials and equipment.
  • Prepares specimens for transport and timely delivery to other departments using appropriate communication forms and labeling techniques.
  • Prepares forms for charges and credits and maintains the department logs, forms and other required statistics.
  • Provides assistance to others in areas of expertise and to other Nursing Departments.
  • Assists in orienting new employees to the department.
  • If cross-trained, performs Nursing Assistant and/or Unit Secretary duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with computer keyboard

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalency preferred with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties.
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical terminology course or one year of previous hospital, clerical or receptionist experience.
  • Satisfactory completion of either FMH’s basic cardiac monitoring course or challenge exams and annual recertification.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to Director or as delegated to RN in the Nursing Department
