Software Engineering Manager

Role purpose:

Global Sportsbook and Trading (GST) is on a mission: "To help Flutter create the world's most compelling sports betting products." As an Engineering Manager in Global Sports, you will play a pivotal role in this mission by leading a team dedicated to providing traders with the tools they need to create and manage sports products on which our customers across our global brands will bet.

As the Engineering Manager, you will work in partnership with the Product Owner to lead a multi-disciplinary squad of highly skilled individuals through the Product Delivery Lifecycle. This role involves accountability for the entire software delivery process, from planning, designing, coding, testing, and deployment to monitoring performance for stability and future-proofing.

In this role, you will be responsible for hiring, performance appraisal, and rewarding your team, focusing on helping them define their career paths and achieve their short and long-term goals. Using lean and agile methodologies, you will oversee the pace, scale, and performance of your team’s delivery in a multi-team, multi-location environment.

What you’ll do:

Leadership & People:

• Nurture a culture of high-quality, results-oriented delivery with accountability.
• Ensure all team members have a clear understanding of priorities and expectations by facilitating regular communication and alignment, and by holding planning sessions at the right time and regular retrospectives to maintain focus and efficiency.
• Coach team members through regular 1:1s, set and review objectives, appraise performance, and assist with career development, ensuring effective performance management.
• Proactively identify and lead on initiatives to improve the experience of being an engineer in GST; whether that is to do with productivity, diversity and inclusion, technical competence or other areas.
• To allow the tribe to grow, work with Talent Teams and other leaders to recruit the best people for your squad.
• Prepare the team for "events that matter". Ensure the engineering team can scale the system effectively to handle increased loads during critical periods without compromising quality or performance.

Software Delivery

• Bring value to stakeholders by working closely with Product and Delivery to determine the best strategy to deliver the roadmap while servicing tech debt.
• Balance the commercial needs of the business against the ideal technical design, proposing strategic and pragmatic implementations with clear delivery plans, including accurate and realistic estimation of time, to ensure successful execution.
• Regularly communicate the status of delivery to stakeholders, clearly highlighting any risks and potential impacts, and proactively develop mitigation strategies to ensure successful outcomes.
• Ensure quality is a first-class citizen in the engineering process and work closely with the QA capability within the squad and wider team to meet the quality demands of the business.
• Measure and review delivery velocity, quality, lead and cycle-times regularly, and promptly address any issues that arise.
• Support changes in the business, including adjustments to roadmap priorities and squad configurations, ensuring seamless transitions and continued alignment with overall business objectives.
• Write, oversee and coordinate with team members and subject experts to ensure the maintenance of accurate and effective documentation.

Ownership:

• Take responsibility for the solution and remove obstacles for the team.
• Work with your squad to develop and implement real-time monitoring, good alert design and first-rate logging strategies to easily check health and availability of services.
• Ensure 24/7 operational support of our products.
• Work closely with the other GST squads to ensure alignment of roadmaps through understanding of dependencies.

• A technical background with a proven track record of leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams delivering complex software projects
• Ability to influence and drive change across the value stream, advocating for necessary improvements and investments.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills to engage, negotiate, and collaborate effectively throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring successful outcomes.
• Experience in long-term planning and strategic thinking to foresee and mitigate potential risks and challenges.
• Ability to lead technical discussions, inspire the team, and drive towards technical excellence, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
• Experience leading people and supporting their career development plans
• Demonstrated expertise in fostering and advancing a collaborative team culture
• Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, particularly concerning technical risks, issues, and constraints
