Job Description

Valuations inform key decisions for the Fund, including asset allocation, risk management and financial reporting. Therefore, accurate, robust, timely and objective valuations are critical for delivering on our mandate and maintaining the trust and confidence of our stakeholders. The Valuations Group oversees valuation practices for all asset classes, geographies and strategies to provide assurance that all valuations serve the various business functions and needs across CPP Investments.

Reporting to the Head of Valuations, as a Managing Director, Valuations, you will have oversight over private equity valuations and lead a team of professionals in executing our quarterly valuation practices. You will be instrumental in setting the multi-year strategic direction for your team and contributing to the evolution of the overall Valuations function, championing it across CPP Investments and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders.

Accountabilities:

  • Own the end-to-end planning and execution of the valuation processes for the Private Equity investment department and provide insightful valuation analysis to proactively identify material quarterly valuation movements.
  • Optimize internal and external resource utilization to deliver our work in the most effective and efficient manner possible while maintaining appropriate quality of work.
  • Manage external valuations, services, processes, and relationships, establishing best practices and guidelines to yield maximum value to CPP Investments.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and opportunities to team members for developing their skills, knowledge, and other competencies in a manner consistent with the needs and strategy of CPP Investments.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and pension peers to develop and maintain robust and rigorous valuation practices, to share valuations knowledge that will support the success of other groups across the Fund, and deliver effective and efficient business outcomes.
  • Own the creation of informative, concise and value add management reports for inclusion in communication with deal teams, Valuation Committee, Audit Committee, and other board level reporting.
  • Oversee complex projects and initiatives, collaborating across groups, effectively managing multiple moving parts and project resources, and integrating the needs of stakeholders for the greatest organizational impact.
  • Recruit and retain high-integrity, high-performance and partnership-focused valuations professionals.
  • Create a motivating work environment by providing regular performance feedback, development oversight, and mentorship to team members.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in related field (i.e., Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, etc.).
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in professional valuation services firms, pension funds, private equity and/or investment banking.
  • Completion of at least one relevant professional designation (CPA, CFA, CBV, etc.).
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to identify and solve issues with the ability to influence at all levels in the organization.
  • Expert in valuation standards and methodologies with excellent research, financial modelling, analytical, and valuation skills.
  • Demonstrable experience managing complex projects and initiatives, collaborating across groups, and effectively managing project resources and stakeholder needs.
  • Superior communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to take concepts or events and present them simply, concisely, and effectively.
  • Strong organizational/project management skills, the ability to manage and achieve multiple deadlines, both internal and external.
  • Demonstrated ability to inclusively lead, inspire, and develop a diverse team of professionals.
  • Exemplifies CPP Investments’ Guiding Principles of integrity, high performance and partnership.
