This Lab Assistant/Summer Intern position will work with the HCGS staff to facilitate molecular biology protocols, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. This position will be in the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies. The Director of the HCGS is a faculty member in the MCBS department of COLSA. The HCGS operates a core facility to provide molecular biology services related to next-generation sequencing and the analysis of the data generated. This position will work with the HCGS team to facilitate sequencing and analysis on a specific, grant-funded project. This position is not considered essential staff.

Duties/Responsibilities

Sample processing for next-generation sequencing (50%)

  • Receive and organize samples for library preparation
  • Ensure that the samples are properly entered and logged into the project tracking planner
  • Perform library preparation for next-generation sequencing, coordinating with HCGS staff to ensure the correct indexing of samples and timing of runs on the instrumentation

Bioinformatics analysis (25%)

  • Analysis of the data generated by next-generation sequencing and preparation of the data for archiving in the appropriate archives and coordinating with the PI and team to integrate the analyses into the ongoing project

Administrative/Team coordination (25%)

  • Attending HCGS lab meetings
  • Attending project specific meetings
  • Working with the HCGS staff as described above to ensure the right types of molecular biology protocols are performed for they types of libraries prepared for sequencing
  • Sample tracking and updating samples in the project planner in SharePoint as they progress through the data generation and analysis pipelines

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • College Coursework in Biology, Genetics, previous experience working in a laboratory or core facility setting

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Course work in biology and genetics
  • Ability to implement and follow molecular biology protocols including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, library preparation for next generations sequencing, bioinformatics analysis, experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Planner)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team-environment
