Job Description

The Senior Director of Pharmacy Informatics is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, operational execution, and continuous improvement of pharmacy informatics systems, processes, and technologies across NYC Health + Hospitals. This position collaborates closely with pharmacy leadership, IT teams, clinical stakeholders, and external partners to drive operational excellence, medication safety, and cost-effective care through the integration of advanced pharmacy technologies. The role is pivotal in shaping the future of pharmacy operations and informatics, ensuring seamless workflow integration, system optimization, and the highest standard of patient care.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Strategic Planning:

  • Lead the development and execution of a strategic vision for pharmacy informatics, aligning initiatives with the overarching goals of NYC Health + Hospitals and the corporate pharmacy office
  • Collaborate with senior leadership, site directors, and IT teams to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in pharmacy operations, automation, and medication safety
  • Design and implement long-term strategies for the integration and optimization of pharmacy technology systems (e.g., Epic, Beacon) to enhance operational performance, safety, and quality of care across all hospital sites
  • Drive the adoption of best practices in pharmacy informatics, ensuring all clinical and operational workflows align with the latest standards, regulatory requirements, and industry trends
  • Spearhead cross-functional initiatives to develop and refine key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality measures that inform data-driven decisions and improve systemwide operational efficiency

2. Operational Performance:

  • Lead the operationalization and optimization of medication workflows across all inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services, ensuring seamless integration with clinical care processes to improve patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and alignment with organizational goals
  • Drive the strategic implementation, scaling, and continuous optimization of advanced pharmacy automation systems across the entire health system, including cutting-edge inventory management solutions, narcotic diversion software, USP 797/800-compliant IV compounding rooms, automated medication cabinets, IV smart pumps, and system-based formulary alignment. Lead initiatives to ensure these technologies are seamlessly integrated into clinical workflows, improving medication safety, reducing errors, and enhancing operational efficiency. Spearhead efforts to maintain compliance with regulatory standards while identifying opportunities for innovation and cost-effectiveness, all with a focus on enhancing patient safety and supporting high-quality care delivery across all pharmacy services
  • Direct post-implementation evaluations of pharmacy informatics and automation solutions to assess their effectiveness in improving operational performance, safety, and cost-efficiency. Leverage performance data to implement refinements and enhance continuous improvements across the system
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, pharmacy, clinical stakeholders, and vendors, to identify and resolve system-related challenges, leading troubleshooting efforts, and implementing corrective actions to ensure minimal disruption to patient care and pharmacy operations
  • Ensure seamless integration and alignment of key pharmacy technologies, such as formulary management, medication administration systems, barcode medication systems, and pharmacy informatics solutions, with system-wide policies, regulatory standards, and evolving clinical needs
  • Develop and refine key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality measures to evaluate pharmacy operational performance, using these metrics to identify areas for improvement, inform decision-making, and drive continuous operational efficiency system-wide
  • Present regular performance reports, delivering comprehensive, data-driven insights and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and site directors, ensuring key trends, opportunities, and operational challenges are communicated clearly to support informed decision-making
  • Oversee the development and implementation of training programs for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff, ensuring effective use of pharmacy informatics, automation tools, and operational workflows, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technology adoption
  • Shape and guide the long-term strategic vision for pharmacy informatics and automation within the health system, establishing governance frameworks, best practices, and operational guidelines to ensure alignment with clinical goals and drive forward-looking improvements in pharmacy care
  • Monitor and manage the financial performance of pharmacy informatics and automation projects, ensuring that all initiatives stay within budget, identify cost-saving opportunities, and maximize return on investment while maintaining high standards of operational performance and patient care quality
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships across departments, ensuring effective communication and operational synergy between pharmacy, IT, clinical services, and other key stakeholders, to enhance cross-functional decision-making and streamline operations

3. Staff Development:

  • Lead the development and execution of staff development programs, including training and continuing education initiatives for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff related to pharmacy informatics and technology utilization
  • Assess the professional development needs of departmental leadership and pharmacy staff, creating tailored goals and providing necessary resources to ensure operational effectiveness
  • Identify gaps in competency and performance, collaborating with leadership to implement corrective plans and enhance staff capabilities through targeted interventions

4. Financial Management:

  • Partner with senior leadership to develop and manage budgets for pharmacy informatics projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial targets
  • Monitor the financial performance of pharmacy informatics initiatives, identifying areas for cost savings, resource optimization, and improved operational efficiencies
  • Prepare and present detailed financial reports and performance metrics to leadership, demonstrating the impact of informatics strategies on organizational goals
  • Manage vendor relationships, negotiating contracts and ensuring that technology investments align with both financial objectives and clinical needs
  • Provide guidance and oversight on the fiscal management of pharmacy-related technologies, ensuring that all systems, tools, and services are delivered within budget and meet operational expectations

Minimum Qualifications

1.Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Healthcare Administration, Health CarePlanning, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related discipline; and seven (7) years ofprogressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration,personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning,liaison and inter-organizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or

2.Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines, as listed in “1” above; and eight(8)years of progressively responsible experience in areas, as listed in “1”; or

3.Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in disciplines, as listed in “1” above.

Department Preferences

  • Experience working for a hospital system and specialized knowledge and experience with
  • multi-disciplinary team collaboration and project management in a clinical environment.
  • Epic for pharmacy management and patient data integration
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel for data analysis, PowerPoint for presentations)
  • Data analytics tools for performance monitoring and continuous improvement
  • Pharmacy informatics and its integration into hospital operations
  • Implementation and optimization of pharmacy automation technologies
  • Data-driven decision making and use of KPIs for continuous performance improvement
  • Advanced Excel skills for data analysis and financial forecasting; familiarity with ERP systems
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale pharmacy departments and leading system-wide operational initiatives
  • Advanced leadership skills with experience in strategic planning and execution
  • Expertise in operational performance improvement and process optimization
  • Financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets and assess cost-saving opportunities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to influence stakeholders, drive change, and manage complex projects
  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, Joint Commission) and compliance frameworks
  • Leadership over pharmacy informatics and technology integration across all inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services
  • Oversight of medication safety and automation systems in procedural care areas
  • Collaboration with IT teams, clinical stakeholders, and pharmacy leadership across hospital sites
  • Direct management of cross-functional teams, including pharmacy, IT, and clinical departments
  • Responsibility for coordinating efforts to ensure system-wide compliance and operational efficiency
  • Minimum of 10 years as a licensed practicing Pharmacist
  • At least 5 years in a managerial or administrative capacity within a hospital or healthcare environment
  • Master’s degree in Hospital Pharmacy Administration, Healthcare Management, or related discipline
  • PharmD from an NYSED accredited program with extensive leadership experience
  • Ongoing professional development through certifications, seminars, and conferences
  • Valid and current New York State Pharmacist license issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)
