Senior Legal Counsel, Claims and Underwriting

Full Time

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Legal Counsel to support our claims and underwriting functions. The role will have a focus on claims, but the successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing legal advice and support across these functions, delivering business outcomes whilst ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and contributing to the overall success of the organisation.

Your New Role

  • Support the Head of Legal, Underwriting and Claims in developing and delivering legal strategy and frameworks for managing legal risk.
  • Contribute to the improvement of legal risk management and best practice processes and controls.
  • Promote legal risk awareness and a risk management culture across business and support units.
  • Undertake legal analysis of and provide advice on strategic and material matters related to claims and underwriting.
  • Support the claims function on ad hoc coverage, claims management queries and contract reviews.
  • Advise on non-claims related disputes, driving legal strategy and resolution.
  • Supporting the Legal team and business on ad hoc underwriting matters, including reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts with legal soundness and commercial appropriateness.
  • Keeping in touch with and analysing legal developments and emerging issues, supporting the Head of Legal manage risks to the business.
  • Represent the legal team in advising senior stakeholders and at all levels of business functions.
  • Support Head of Legal and Chief Legal Officer deliver group, board, and business projects.
  • Ensure the legal team is a trusted and accessible resource for the business.
  • Help develop the legal function to align with business needs.
  • Mentor and support Legal Counsel and monitor their development.
  • Foster strong internal relationships within the legal team.

About You

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister with a minimum of 7 years’ post-qualification experience.
  • Strong background in (re)insurance law, with experience in insurance coverage and claims related issues.
  • Proven ability to manage complex legal matters and projects independently.
  • Capable of applying legal skills to work comfortably beyond immediate areas of expertise and responsibility.
  • Insurance distribution knowledge and experience.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders (Head of/Director level).
  • Strong commercial awareness and pragmatic approach to legal issues.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK/EU insurance regulation and its impact on insurance businesses, including underwriting, claims and distribution.
  • Good understanding of company law, contract, agency, competition law, tort and statutory obligations.
  • Capable of working across multiple matters and specialties and maintain pace.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and legal document management tools.
