The purpose of this role is to provide independent, commercially focused legal advice to a specific business unit or specialism, ensuring effective risk mitigation for the organisation. The role involves representing the company by offering legal guidance, enhancing legal principles, providing strategic solutions to management, and proactively addressing concerns, risks, and liabilities across the organisation. Additionally, the role requires the ability to manage legal matters autonomously.

The Opportunity:

General Corporate Legal Counsel - Asia Regional

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts including distribution, procurement, outsourcing, partnership, and service-level agreements.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory issues relating to the general insurance industry, with emphasis on business operations, new products, marketing, and digital initiatives.
  • Provide legal input on strategic and business projects, including cross-border initiatives.

Corporate Governance

  • Support the company secretarial function and board governance matters, including preparing resolutions, reviewing board papers, and maintaining statutory registers.
  • Advise on the implementation of group governance policies and frameworks across the region.
  • Assist in managing regulatory engagements with local regulators (e.g., Bank Negara Malaysia, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Hong Kong Insurance Authority) on non-claims related matters.

Your new role:

Regulatory Compliance (Legal Perspective)

  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting the insurance industry in the region and provide proactive legal guidance.
  • Assist in policy reviews and internal training on relevant legal and regulatory developments.
  • Work closely with Compliance and Risk teams to identify and mitigate legal risks.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as Finance, HR, IT, Marketing, and Operations to support various business functions.
  • Provide legal guidance during audits, due diligence processes, and corporate transactions (e.g., restructurings, joint ventures).

Regional Coordination

  • Act as a key point of contact for legal matters in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
  • Align local legal practices with group standards and policies.
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel where necessary.

About You:

  • LLB or equivalent legal qualification from a Commonwealth Law jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience, preferably with a mix of private practice and in-house (insurance or financial services sector strongly preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of corporate/commercial law and regulatory frameworks in Singapore and Malaysia, with exposure to Hong Kong being a plus.
  • Experience in corporate governance and board-related matters is highly desirable.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple jurisdictions and stakeholders effectively.
