Jacobs has acquired StreetLight Data, a mobility analytics solution provider – marking the company’s second strategic acquisition in recent months and building on its strong foundation of existing technology and data capabilities. StreetLight pioneered the use of Big Data analytics to help transportation professionals and data analysts measure, analyze and improve transportation. Applying proprietary machine-learning algorithms to location data from mobile phones, vehicle navigation devices and IoT, StreetLight sheds light on travel patterns and makes them available on-demand via the world’s first SaaS platform for mobility, StreetLight InSight®. From measuring traffic volumes to optimizing new infrastructure to planning for autonomous vehicles, StreetLight powers more than 10,000 projects every month.
StreetLight continues to operate as an independent software organization. StreetLight Data is seeking a creative, versatile, and motivated Senior Data Engineer to be part of our growing team. This team member will lead data engineering projects to develop and maintain data pipelines for our product, as well as help productize those data products and algorithms into our scalable StreetLight InSight® analytics platform. This position reports to the Director of Data Science.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain comprehensive geospatial data repositories (including tables, schema, metadata, and spatial files) by processing census, OpenStreetMap, and other similar sources.
- Optimize pipelines, frameworks, and systems to facilitate development of data artifacts. Transform raw data into cleaned, organized and actionable formats. Solve data integration problems.
- Ensure high scalability and performance of software components and systems, with optimal use of machine resources.
- Optimize and tune SQL queries to ensure efficient performance and scalability in Google BigQuery.
- Productize data science algorithms within the StreetLight InSight® platform, in collaboration with the data science and web application engineering teams.
- Interface among our United States, Canada and Eastern European teams. Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and data scientists to understand data needs. Participate in peer design and code reviews.
- Participate in a global team to support Jacobs StreetLight's 24x7 SaaS solutions. This will include some rotational on-call responsibilities
Here's what you'll need
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or an Engineering discipline from a top university.
- 3-5 years of experience in developing software and/or data products, with programming experience with Python, and one other language (Scala, Java, Rust, ect). Strong skills in algorithms, data structures, technical design, and software architecture.
- 2+ years of experience in SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL or Big Query preferred), and good understanding of relational concepts.
- Experience with cloud and/or big data technologies.
- Strong data analysis skills, statistics, knowing what can/cannot be possible, and ability to visualize data in the best way possible
- Good communication skills - written, visual (presentations), and verbal.
- Ability to deliver adequate results on deadline and make compromises to enable scalability and productization of algorithms.
- Quick learner, and a strong team player
- Geo-spatial skills are a plus.
- Knowledge of transportation data / industry is a plus.
