ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Planning & Development Department guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs to arise. The process is governed through the development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.
The Planning & Development Department currently has a vacancy for a Building Code Examiner in the Inspections Division. This Building Code Examiner position primarily works in the Field as a Plan reviewer and Combination Building Inspector. The position is part of the City of Phoenix Commercial Permit By Inspector (PBI) Program.
The Building Code Examiner will perform highly specialized and complex residential and/or commercial construction plan review AND inspection work, determine the proposed construction conforms to various codes and ordinances, and interprets building plans and specs. They will review construction drawings for approval, perform inspections for on residential or commercial projects, and at a pre-construction meeting determine when construction may begin. Work is performed under the general direction of a General Inspection Field Supervisor or a Site Development Supervisor.
Commercial Building Code Examiner - Inspections
This position in Commercial meets with representatives of commercial projects to perform multi-discipline plan review and inspections. This assignment differs as it is a multi-discipline clarification with a broader range of duties including plan review, and inspections of mulit-family, tenant improvements, fire damage repairs, and demolition. Each incumbent is responsible for reviewing and approving construction drawings and plans, and ensuring the proposed construction is compliant with the International Building Code (IBC), National Electrical Code (NEC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), Uniform Plumbing Code (IAPMO), Ansi/A117.1 (Accessibility), and the City of Phoenix Building Code.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Knowledge of ICC (International Code Council) construction codes.
- Knowledge of International Building code (IBC), International Residential construction code (IRC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), and International Mechanical code (IMC).
- Ability to read and interpret Construction Plans.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other City employees, departments, and the general public.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
SALARY
Pay Range: $35.08 to $51.83 per hour.
Hiring Range: $35.08 to $42.64 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of experience reviewing plans, schedules, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, zoning ordinance, and related regulations.
- Two years at the level of Construction Permit Specialist II.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience completing inspections.
- Experience reviewing construction plans.
- Experience using construction permit and/or electronic plan review software.
- Experience in preparing and interpreting building construction plans.
- Experience working with public or on a public counter.
