Redwood Credit Union is looking for a Communications and PR Specialist who will be responsible for researching, developing, writing, proofreading, editing, and executing organizational and corporate communications, social media, and public relations efforts to support the Redwood Group’s strategic objectives and business needs. This position supports project communications, internal communications, Member communications including forms and notices, and urgent/crisis communications. Performs a variety of communications, social media, public and media relations tasks and projects including email administration that involves working with email systems and data to administer and execute targeted emails and communications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Communications & Writing

  • Serves as a writer, content creator and communications specialist for Redwood Credit Union’s corporate and organizational communications as well as its subsidiary RCU Services Group and RCU Community Fund, Inc. This includes writing and/or editing Member communications, copywriting for Member letters and emails, newsletters, annual report, website copy, knowledge base questions and answers, video content, and other communications and materials. Also includes developing, writing, and editing talking points, merger communications, staff/Member frequently asked questions (FAQs), and other key projects.
  • Works with a variety of communication tools and systems including email systems and data, direct mail vendors, content management and knowledge base systems, video vendors and systems, etc.
  • Exhibiting extremely strong project management, communication and organizational skills, executes all aspects of communications for key projects such as organizational projects, requests for proposals, and other specialized communications.
  • Research assigned projects and quickly produces work that represents the voice and brand of Redwood Credit Union, RCU Insurance Services and RCU Auto Services, while ensuring consistency with existing tone/feel of our internal and external communications.
  • Provides brand and quality control for department and organizational efforts by writing, proofreading and/or editing a wide variety of communication pieces, including emails, letters, notices, web copy, press releases, forms and disclosures, internal and external communications, and other documents.
  • Develops and assists with supporting organization’s marketing promotions, materials, and efforts through effective communication.
  • Regularly scans the credit union industry, financial and economic environments for emerging consumer and business trends to incorporate into communications and drive recommendations for key issues to be addressed/communicated to a variety of audiences. Also uses this information to continually enhance communication pieces to ensure relevance, and shares insights with the organization.
  • Assists with maintaining documentation of RCU’s history.
  • Participates in groups and committees to provide communication support as needed, including organizational projects, new product releases, new branches or delivery channels, etc.

Public Relations

  • Supports writing and editing of press releases for The Redwood Group.
  • Helps to maintain media database and contacts.
  • Fields requests from the media for interviews. Makes recommendations regarding best approach to response, coordinates interviews, research media questions and crafts key messages/preparation documents.
  • Monitors, tracks and reports press coverage of The Redwood Group.

Social Media & Other Functions

  • Reviews and approves scheduled social media content prepared by Social Media Specialist.
  • Supports content creation for social media.
  • Acts as a back-up to Social Media Specialist when necessary, to create and schedule content.
  • Works with Marketing Department and other key stakeholders in gaining input and information for proactive and/or responsive posts.
  • Takes an active role in community events and contributes to local area non-profits via volunteerism, expert knowledge sharing, etc.
  • Supports Member and community events including the Annual Membership Meeting, branch events and other company events and needs.

Minimum Qualification: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven knowledge and skills in the writing and positioning of corporate communications and promotional efforts including consumer informational and/or educational content, complex corporate communications, web content, crisis communications, etc.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, principles, practices and writing techniques, including grammar and punctuation in the AP style.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using the applications within the Microsoft Office Suite, plus additional online tools and resources.
  • Experience in social media including techniques for content creation and management.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise independent and good judgment.
  • Demonstrated abilities in project management.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to ensure brand and quality control.
  • Ability to analyze situations and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse group of people.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to communicate effectively in crisis situations while meeting urgent deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, and turn.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Work environment is indoors, majority of the time is spent sitting at a desk.

The ideal candidate has a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations or closely related field and a minimum of three years of specific job-related experience including writing, proofreading, and editing.

Compensation: Base starting range: $33.00 to $44.00 per hour commensurate with experience.

Our base salary starting range is based on scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, and internal peer equity.
