This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW and The New School. More information about this agreement and SENS-UAW may be found on the Labor Relations website. The pay rate is $29.20/hr, effective September 1, 2025.

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of writing projects and assist with general academic skill building such as oral presentations and time management (training provided). Writing assistance includes brainstorming topics, developing outlines, formulating/strengthening arguments, helping revise drafts in various stages of development, helping students correctly cite sources and other plagiarism avoidance (including AI), cover letter and resume help, personal statements, as well as more in-depth writing projects such as theses, dissertations and research proposals.
  • Help students develop their independent writing and revision skills (and presentation and time management skills in those cases) and increase their awareness of additional university resources.
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
  • Complete administrative tasks, such as writing brief descriptions of each session and emailing a brief summary of daily attendance.
  • Other opportunities include leading in-class workshops and/or specialized ULC workshops.
  • Tutoring will be hybrid, with both online and in-person shifts (according to tutor availability).

Salary: $29.20/hr

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Tutors must be currently enrolled in a PhD program at The New School and have at least one year of tutoring experience or teaching writing/English in a formal academic setting.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality
  • Able to commit to 8 (or more) tutoring hours per week
  • Willingness to tutor in person 25-50% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with ESL and graduate-level students strongly preferred
  • Experience working with students with ADHD a plus
  • Federal Work Study preferred
