GENERAL DESCRIPTION

You will lead our data platform team to provide reliable data infrastructure and own the developer experience for analysts, BI developers, software engineers, and agents utilizing the platform. The data platform team also publishes standard datasets as building blocks for other engineering teams, and manages our internal data publishing ecosystem.

Data-driven services power the supply chain visibility our clients require and enable our operations to move freight around the world, enabling global trade.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Direct the Data Engineering function:

  • Deploy and operate key infrastructure, including
  • Compute & storage in AWS, Azure, and Snowflake
  • Streaming platform, including Kafka as an internal service
  • Deployment pipelines
  • Observability tooling
  • Incident management tooling & process
  • Implementation & maintenance of data ingestion pipelines
  • Reliable orchestration & job execution
  • Developer platform for data practitioners to enable BI, analysis, & ML workflows
  • Developer and machine experience for partner teams (SWE, integrations)

Direct the Data Services function:

  • Canonical push & pull interfaces for core operational systems
  • Coordinating deployment of core logic across different serving mechanisms and teams
  • Technical strategy for meeting technical constraints for operational and data warehousing workloads while reducing duplication of code and logical definitions
  • Ensure proper incident management and on-call support for all data platform functions
  • Focus on automated recovery, reducing operational burden over time
  • Maintain clear SLAs for service reliability, latency, and uptime
  • Manage expectations and error budgets to minimize out-of-business-hours incidents
  • Work across teams with tech leads and other managers to set common engineering standards and guide organization-level architecture evolution
  • Drive a roadmap for sensible architecture and design decisions for the data platform, while giving engineers a chance to own decisions and work with autonomy
  • Oversee the design review & code review processes to maintain a consistent, reliable codebase over time while mentoring engineers
  • Manage cost and vendor relationships for the data platform
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Talking, hearing and using hands to operate computer equipment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Job will require regular and punctual attendance as well as presence on-site at the assigned work location.

OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Deep understanding of query engines and database storage
  • Deep understanding of streaming concepts (consistency, ordering, idempotency) and core streaming systems

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  • 5+ years programming in any modern language
  • 5+ years using distributed query/storage engines or cloud data warehouses
  • 5+ years operating data pipelines, including modern orchestration & change data capture
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Professional certification may be required in some areas
