Job Description

The SU Press at the Syracuse University Libraries is searching for an Editorial and Production Assistant (EPA). This position supports and assists the Editorial and Production team through all stages of book production, including preparation of manuscripts for editing, assisting with the production of reprints, checking printer proof corrections, managing printer requests, submitting Library of Congress cataloging applications, corresponding with authors and freelancers, print and digital file assessment and maintenance, and other tasks as directed. The EPA covers all basic tasks involved in preparing book manuscripts for printing. The EPA also participates in team and press-wide meetings and has an overall understanding of the book publishing process.

Education and Experience

Required qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a humanities or applied arts discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Sound knowledge of English language and grammar, scholarly apparatus, and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Good writing and editing skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with digital image files and design principles.
  • Training or experience using Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Cloud suites (especially InDesign) required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with project organization, tracking, and assessment; manage vendor requests.
  • Prepare manuscripts and reprint files; correspond with freelancers, press staff, and occasionally authors; update tracking schedules as needed.
  • Check printer proofs and review print and e-pub advance copies for errors.
  • Submit Library of Congress cataloging applications.
  • Print and digital file assessment, maintenance, and clean up as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
