Job Introduction

The BBC Serbian Service is part of the BBC World Service, delivering impartial and in-depth news and analysis to Serbian-speaking audiences worldwide. With a focus on digital innovation, we produce content that resonates with our audience, utilizing modern storytelling techniques across various platforms, including our website and social media channels.

Launched in March 2018, BBC News Serbian offers digital-first journalism that resonates with audiences in Serbia and the wider Balkan region. Our mission is to counter misinformation and uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity. We collaborate with local media outlets to extend our reach and impact.

Main Responsibilities

As a journalist with BBC News Serbian, you will:

  • Originate and produce a wide variety of news and current affairs content across digital, audio, and video platforms.
  • Utilize a range of video, audio, and digital equipment to research, write, assemble, edit, and deliver outputs to the highest professional standards.
  • Present content on radio, TV, or online, both live and recorded.
  • Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • Undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, ensuring content meets BBC's editorial guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with team members and other BBC departments to share output material, avoid duplication, and uphold best practices.
  • Lead specific pieces of journalism or projects within a team setting.
  • Tailor news treatments for different audiences, ensuring output reflects the diverse audiences we serve.
  • Prioritize and plan activities, considering deadlines, staffing, and available resources.
  • Produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.
  • Deliver content to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Adhere to the BBC Health and Safety policy at all times.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Fluent Serbian speaker with the ability to speak and translate from English into Serbian and vice versa.
  • Have knowledge of data analytic tools to enhance and explain major news stories.
  • Possess knowledge of producing high-quality digital content, including information graphics, maps, graphical interactives, multimedia explainers, data journalism, data visualization, and other bespoke-format web content.
  • Can generate ideas for data-driven stories and how they might be developed and visualized for various platforms.
  • Knowledge of Russian is welcomed.
  • Have significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • Demonstrate sound editorial and policy decisions based on a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda and the requirements of news and current affairs coverage.
  • Are adept at using technology to gather material for broadcast.
  • Can write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce, and translate with accuracy, clarity, and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
  • Understand Health & Safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
