TRANSPORTATION BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTOR/EVALUATOR

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction & supervision of the Transportation Training Manager, trains and evaluates new and experienced commercial drivers as well as Pupil Transportation Assistants within the school district. Incumbent performs related duties as required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Behind the Wheel Instructor

  • Trains and evaluates commercial drivers and Pupil Transportation Assistants
  • Assists drivers in solving work problems
  • Recommends personnel actions, such as retrains and/or discharges.
  • Helps in the writing of training material for new and experienced commercial drivers.
  • May assist with interviewing of new drivers.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee information
  • May assist with the evaluation of white fleet drivers,
  • May need to be certified as a CDL examiner at the Training Manager's discretion.
  • Works closely with District personnel, school officials and fleet maintenance staff to identify training and/or mechanical areas needed for improvement.
  • Provides new and continuous driving and safety training.
  • Coordinates and oversees School Bus Safety program.
  • Provides input on driving performance evaluations.
  • Explains and demonstrates proper driving techniques, mechanical and maintenance operations, safety and emergency procedures, passenger behavior management techniques, and departmental and District operating practices.
  • Observes and evaluates individual drivers' driving and passenger control abilities. Evaluates driver performance under various driving conditions to ensure conformance with federal and state vehicle codes, vehicle operational laws and standards, and District policies and procedures.
  • Recommends and/or provides general or specialized training to improve driver deficiencies.
  • Creates and maintains, written and electronic detailed and accurate training documents, records and forms.
  • Certify new commercial drivers proficient as outlined by the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule including the ability to work a split shift if necessary and manage time to maximize productivity of assigned duties.
  • Serves as a bus driver as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be:

  1. Equivalent to a high school diploma;

AND

  1. Have been driving a school bus in this State of Nevada for at least the immediate preceding 2 years. Additionally, in the immediate preceding 3 years, not have any convictions for a moving violation while driving a bus; or records of involvement in an accident while driving a school bus for which he/she is at fault or which could have been prevented, and two (2) years progressively responsible experience pertaining to any combination of training, teaching, instructing, or supervising in a transportation or operational environment.

Knowledge of: Reading, writing, and basic math; state and local laws, regulations, rules and practices of school bus operations, including defensive driving and emergency procedures; passenger behavior management techniques; Nevada Motor Vehicle Code; applicable and current safety standards and procedures; use and function of safety and mechanical systems and equipment; instruction and evaluation techniques.

Skill at: Applying, teaching and/or evaluating defensive driving principles and safety practices; establishing and maintaining working relationships with those contacted in course of performing assigned duties; communicating effectively, verbally and in writing; following oral and written instructions; supervising, training and evaluating other; dealing appropriately with confidential data.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) , with Passenger and School Bus endorsements; current CPR & First Aid certification .
