Salary Plan:
Traffic Systems Spec I: B18 ($45,521 - $71,055)
Traffic Systems Spec II: B19 ($48,244 - $76,028)
Traffic Systems Spec III: B20 ($51,158 - $81,351)

Position Description
Traffic Systems Specialist I or II:
Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all issues are referred to the supervisor.
Traffic Systems Specialist III:
Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Traffic Systems Specialist I:
- Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.
- Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
- Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
- Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.
- Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
- Performs complex electronic repairs and rewires systems; adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems and replaces controllers and other electronic devices.
- Provides technical expertise and training of field technicians in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of complex electronic/electrical systems in the field.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Traffic Systems Specialist II:
- Assists in developing strategic plans to meet core business needs.
- Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.
- Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
- Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
- Performs complex electronic repairs and rewires systems; adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems and replaces controllers and other electronic devices.
- Provides technical expertise and training of field technicians in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of complex electronic/electrical systems in the field.
- Responds to complaints and identifies problems regarding traffic signal timing, congestion, operations and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
- Reviews construction plans to ensure that plans do not conflict with existing utilities; advises supervisor of conflicts and recommends a course of action.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Traffic Systems Specialist III:
- Assembles, beta tests and evaluates new traffic management equipment including illumination controller assemblies and systems; makes recommendations to accept or return equipment.
- Responds to complaints and identifies problems regarding traffic signal timing, congestion, operations and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
- Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.

Minimum Qualifications:
Traffic Systems Specialist I, II or III:
- High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Traffic Systems Specialist I
- 2 YEARS Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance.
- Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.
Traffic Systems Specialist II
- 3 YEARS Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance.
- Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.
Traffic Systems Specialist III
- 4 YEARS Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance.
- Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications:
Traffic Systems Specialist I, II or III:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License without transmission restrictions or obtain a CDL license by participating in a company sponsored CDL training paid for by the agency.
- Must obtain a "N" endorsement within 30 days of hire or within 30 days of receiving a Class "A" Driver's License.
Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL with an "N" endorsement within 120 calendar days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver
Preferred Qualifications:
Commercial Class "A" Driver's License without transmission restrictions with an “N” endorsement.

- Work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights.
- Work with electricity up to 600 volts.
