Wastewater Collection & Treatment
Incumbent will be the primary operator for the extended aeration plant(s) with tertiary sand filters and disinfected by liquid chlorination. Responsibilities as an operator require the performance of laboratory tests on influent, effluent, and mixed liquids for such things as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solids (SS), chlorine residuals, settle ability and other parameters, and adjusting pumps, return flow rates, and other process controls to produce the best effluent possible prior to discharge to the river. Incumbent is required to keep accurate logs on the various phases of operation, plant condition, and laboratory test results. Incumbent may be assigned shift responsibility and may be solely responsible for operations of the plant to include obtaining samples and performing laboratory tests. In the event of a breakdown or malfunction, the incumbent must determine its seriousness and decide whether to shut down the plant until repairs can be made. Incumbent must determine what repairs are required; if the plant can be operated manually until repairs are made; if the repairs required are within the incumbent's competency or not; and if not, who to notify to get repairs accomplished, etc. Incumbent must also perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and servicing of mechanical equipment such as valves, compressors, motors, centrifugal, macerator, and air lift pumps, automatic controls such as electrical relays, time delay switches, and pump start-stop switches. Incumbent must also inspect and maintain the collection system that consists of gravity sewer lines, manholes, sewage force mains, and lift stations. The lift stations require inspection and servicing of mechanical equipment similar to the treatment plants. Incumbent will be required to develop pertinent scopes of work for utility system projects and repairs. In addition, incumbent will also be engaged in managing contractor activities on some projects which will require a Contracting Officer Representative (COR) Certification to be obtained. This position is a member of the facilities team and the park as a whole. It is important that incumbent maintain open communication with others, support team initiatives and work plans, and foster a positive and inclusive work environment.
Water Treatment Plant Operations: Incumbent will be the operator for a water treatment system. The incumbent will be responsible for daily, weekly and monthly inspections of the system in order to meet the standards set forth by Federal and State Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Incumbent performs periodic inspections and servicing of pumps, chlorinators, and electrical control mechanisms on outlying water systems with hypo chlorinators. Incumbent is required to check chlorine residual of potable water and adjusts chlorine feed rate to keep it within tolerable limits. Must be able to disassemble, clean, overhaul, and reassemble chlorinators as required.
Electrical: Incumbent trouble shoots (traces and locates defects) and tests existing electrical lines, circuits, fixtures controls, and equipment. Employee must have a working knowledge of circuit breakers, time delay relays, pump start, and stop switches, etc.
You must possess and maintain OR be able to obtain a Water Systems Operators License. Arizona Class 2 or equivalent. Applicant needs to have this license prior to being hired. Applicant must provide valid documentation by the closing date of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The incumbent will be required to do considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls, and to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work is usually indoors and occasionally outside for short periods where the incumbent is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Incumbent is exposed to infections or diseases such as typhoid and dysentery while cleaning equipment or shoveling sludge, and the presence of hazardous gases such as methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide. Incumbent is also subject to electrical shock, loud noises, battery acids, and hydraulic fluids while working around motors and pumps. There is frequent exposure to shock, burns, and strains. Incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear and may be worn or used for long periods of time.
