Job Description

We are seeking recreation leaders who are dependable, enthusiastic and who likes to work with community children to support our spring, and summer youth programs.

The recreation leader supports the Department’s Recreational Programs within the City’s community centers, special events, and Parks which includes various day camp programs, such as Stay and Play, summer outdoor camps, community special events, and facility operations.

The primary duty of the recreation leader is supervising various age groups of children that participate in the programs; with ages ranging from 6-15 and providing customer service. Related duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supervises children from ages 6-15 for the Summer Blast program; assist with facility supervision and program support at events and programs. Plans and participates in activities appropriate for ages 6-15 in the programs; supervises full facility and activities for participants of all ages . Interacts with children in active and passive games; ability to make fair game decisions, some knowledge of game rules; ability to read directions; and divides children into equal age groups. Requires active participation in field trips and center settings and various crafts, activities and games.
  • Provides excellent customer service that meets the expectations of the City’s Customer Service Initiative, while following set standards for providing customer service to participants, parents, coaches, volunteers, officials, spectators, and citizens; responds to inquiries, rule interpretations, and communicates program and event information.
  • Resolves conflicts between children in a calm and orderly manner; report behavior issues to management staff and parents. Responds to accidents and injuries, may perform basic first aid. Submits written reports, of accidents/incidents, equipment, and inventory needs, to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Prepares, organizes, and sets up/breaks down equipment at the facility, sets up various athletic and recreational equipment, tables, chairs, waste receptacles, may perform some field and facility maintenance and prep for activities and events. Breaks down after the event and performs general custodial duties such as trash pickup, sweep floors, clean restrooms and pack/load equipment.
  • Processes program registrations and collect payments. Controls the disbursement, collection, storage of equipment, and overall site inventory. Inspects facilities and play areas for safety/damage, enforces safety rules and regulations, and maintains organization.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must have ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to use a telephone; read and interpret rules and regulations.
  • Requires a degree of mobility that would allow for interaction with children in active and passive games. Must have the ability to lift and set up tables and chairs and organize site equipment.
  • General knowledge of recreational activities including athletics, arts and crafts, music and dance, board games, and special events.
  • May be required to work at City special events and activities as program support staff.
  • Possess positive customer service skills and abilities.
  • Previous work experience as a camp counselor, childcare provider, independent contractor or teacher
