Job Description

The Director of Educator Certification and Academic Services will direct all educator and related certification programs at Tarleton State University. This position is housed in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education. The Director will lead the Educator Certification and Academic Services team in managing certification, testing, field experiences, and other aspects of certification for educators (in the Teacher Education Program) as well as those in the School Counseling, Principal Certification, Educational Diagnostician, Reading Specialist, and Superintendent certification programs (collectively known as the professional programs).

This is a 12-month non-tenure track, fixed-term faculty position located on Tarleton’s main campus in Stephenville, Texas. The faculty member will carry a 90% administrative load and a 10% teaching load. Work hours: Mon-Fri 8 AM – 5 PM or as work and teaching requirements indicate. May be required to teach at other campuses or online at the institution’s discretion. Must have the ability to work remotely at the request of the university in times of inclement weather or other special circumstances.

Responsibilities

90% Administrative Role:

  • Supervise Personnel in Educator Certification and Academic Services: This individual will be responsible for providing leadership to the Educator Certification and Academic Services staff. This includes holding regularly schedule staff meetings; collaboratively establishing annual performance goals; assessing staff performance; and evaluating the effectiveness of the staff in fulfilling the mission of the office.
  • Strategically Plan, Implement, and Assess: This individual will be responsible for leading the Educator Certification and Academic Services staff and appropriate program area faculty in strategic planning concerning certification. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for assisting program areas in the collection and analysis of relevant certification data. This individual will lead the staff in Educator Certification and Academic Services in efforts to regularly assess the effectiveness of current processes and procedures.
  • Lead Teacher Education and Professional Program Efforts: This individual will serve as the chair of the Educator Preparation Council and the required advisory committee(s). This individual will be responsible for regularly communicating updates from TEA and other relevant education entities; this individual will assist the dean and relevant department heads in maintaining open lines of communication with relevant certification areas outside of the College of Education.
  • Other duties as assigned.

10% Faculty Role:

  • Teach one course (3 semester credit hours) per academic year in the fall or spring semester within either the Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership & Technology departments.
  • Develop course syllabi, select instructional materials, and design assessments such as exams, quizzes, papers, etc.
  • Assess student performance, provide timely feedback, and evaluate student learning outcomes to inform teaching practices and curriculum improvements.
  • Engage students in active learning, foster critical thinking skills, and provide opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and hands-on learning.
  • Provide academic support and guidance to students through office hours, feedback on assignments, and mentoring.
  • Adhere to university policies, academic integrity standards, and accreditation requirements related to teaching responsibilities.
  • Incorporate innovative teaching methods, technologies, and pedagogical approaches to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities to stay current in the field, improve teaching skills, and explore new instructional strategies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, departmental faculty, and university staff to coordinate course offerings, share resources, and contribute to program development and improvement.
  • Participate in institutional service roles including but not limited to, college committees, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.

Education and Experience

  • Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching any grade, P-12.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of disciplinary subject matter at a level adequate for graduate-level instruction; written and oral communication skills sufficient to conduct effective teaching and research activities; ability to interact with students, staff, and faculty in a professional, collegial, and collaborative manner.
