Gas Engineering is involved in designing the installation and replacement of gas mains and services. The Junior Designer will learn all aspects of Gas Engineering by rotating through various groups within Gas Distribution Engineering, Transmission Engineering and Project Management & Customer Programs. The Junior Designers will be responsible for providing service determination rulings, designing and drawing gas main and service layouts, interpreting construction documents, developing estimates, updating maps and records, and ensuring compliance with company standards, specifications, and regulations. The Jr Designer will work closely with various internal and external stakeholders.
Core Responsibilities
- The Jr Designer is responsible for planning, designing, drawing, mapping, and estimating layout work for the addition of new facilities to the Gas Distribution System.
- Jr Designers evaluate the distribution system capacity and provide for load growth.
- Perform drafting and design in AutoCAD 2D or current drawing program.
- Utilize current computer technologies to render 3D designs.
- Read, interpret and prepare civil, structural, and/or architectural construction drawings, including plans, sections, and details with knowledge of how to interpret company plates, layouts, field sketches, and other drawings (all of which involve color coding). These also include gas, electric, steam, company mains and services, conduit and regulator plates.
- Expected to advance to the Sr. Designer career path in Gas Engineering.
- Designer is expected to work in various groups based on departmental need.
- Make field visits as required/necessary.
Required Education/Experience
- High School Diploma/GED and 2 years' of relevant drafting (design) work experience which may also include construction management in a design capacity. or
- Associate's Degree In Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Architectural Technology (AAS Technical/Science).
Relevant Work Experience
- Computer proficiency with the ability to perform drafting and design in AutoCAD 2D.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
- Ability to read, interpret, and prepare civil, structural, and architectural construction drawings, including plans, sections, and details. This includes knowledge of interpreting company plates, layouts, field sketches, and other drawings, all of which involve color coding. Additionally, this encompasses gas, electric, steam, company mains and services, conduit, and regulator plates.
- Possesses a working knowledge of civil, structural, and architectural design issues.
- Knowledge of 3D design and the ability to utilize current computer technologies to render 3D designs is preferred.
- Knowledge of Microstation and eGIS is preferred.

Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday.
- Possess manual dexterity and the ability to use hands for the duration of the workday.
- Stand to use/operate office equipment for the duration of the workday.
- Ability to read small print and symbols.
- Willing and able to work at field locations in all weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, height, confined spaces, etc.).
- Willing and able to wear all necessary personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including; fire retardant clothing and safety harness.
- All applicants must pass all required placement exams.
- Field work may require extensive walking, climbing, bending, kneeling.
- Capable of using stairs to reach second floor work location as there is no elevator access.
