JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and directing all aspects of

groundskeeping operations across Bibb County School District properties. This includes land grading, stormwater drainage management, and landscaping maintenance and improvements. The role requires a leader with technical expertise and a proactive, innovative mindset to anticipate and resolve unforeseen environmental and site-related challenges that may impact district operations and safety.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises all groundskeeping personnel and external contractors performing grading, drainage, and landscaping work.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
  • Plans, directs, assigns, instructs, supervises, and review the work and activities of various levels of grounds workers involved in a variety of grounds maintenance work.
  • Monitors and assesses stormwater drainage systems; lead improvements and repairs to prevent erosion, flooding, or water damage.
  • Coordinates with civil engineers or consultants when needed to address complex site conditions.
  • Manages seasonal landscaping projects, including mowing, planting, mulching, pruning, irrigation, and fertilization.
  • Develops aesthetically appealing and sustainable landscape designs that enhance learning
  • environments.
  • Identifies and recommends innovative technologies, materials, and practices for grounds maintenance and sustainability.
  • Creates contingency plans to address weather-related or environmental emergencies.
  • Assists in developing and managing the grounds maintenance budget.
  • Maintains accurate records of inspections, projects, and compliance reports.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Facilities and other departments regarding landscaping projects and outdoor event support.
  • Respond to emergency calls and resolve urgent grounds-related issues as needed.
  • Directs and assists in the application of herbicides and insecticides to grounds in compliance with all state, local, and federal regulations.
  • Receives work orders and assigns, schedules and inspect work projects of grounds crews;
  • maintains maintenance schedule.
  • Orders and requisitions supplies and equipment; estimates material requirements; maintains
  • material and equipment inventory; estimates job costs; keeps records and submits reports as
  • required.
  • Utilizes and maintains equipment and material in a responsible and reliable manner.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned by the Director of Facilities and Maintenance

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency. Eight (8) years of experience in grounds maintenance. Five (5) years supervisory experience preferred. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, processes, materials, and equipment of the grounds maintenance trade.
  • Knowledge of qualities and adaptabilities of various materials used for the maintenance, development, and upkeep of grounds.
  • Knowledge of supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of land grading, soil science, drainage systems, and landscaping best practices.
  • Skills in the use of the tools and equipment of the trade and in their care and maintenance.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of Groundskeepers and helpers.
  • Ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and written.
  • Ability to estimate material requirements from maps, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with personnel of other departments.
  • Proficient in reading site plans, blueprints, and irrigation/drainage schematics.
  • Extensive use of tools and equipment of the trade and in their care and maintenance.
  • Extensive knowledge of ground maintenance practices, landscape design, and irrigation systems.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations, pesticide application, and athletic field preparation.
  • Proficiency in scheduling, budgeting, and recordkeeping.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Current and valid Georgia commercial driver’s license is required.

SALARY/TERMS/BENEFITS:

  1. 239 day contract year; 8 hours per day
  2. Salary Range: $27.02 - $29.55 hourly (Grade 58) annually (placement on salary schedule based on years of related experience). Up to ten years allowed. The stated salary range reflects the opportunity for pay over the course of the employee's tenure. For external candidates, the top pay is not a potential starting salary.
