The Archaeology Laboratory Assistant (Temporary Project) is responsible for intake and management of artifacts recovered in a salvage archaeology project in New Hampshire. The position requires washing, processing, identifying, and cataloguing archaeological materials working in the UNH Archaeology Laboratory and following standard archaeological laboratory protocols for artifacts and producing a digital database.

Duties/Responsibilities

(35%) Washing and Processing Artifacts

  • All recovered artifacts must be either washed or processed, depending on material type (no washing of metal, for instance).

(35%) Identifying Artifacts

  • Once dry, all artifacts must be identified to level of material type, diagnostic type, ceramic type (if ceramic), source, and origin of materials (as much as is possible).

(30%) Cataloguing Artifacts

  • Create a digital database (in Excel) that catalogues all artifacts broken up by recovery context, material type, and diagnostic features.
  • Artifacts must be recorded on catalogue tags on acid-free paper.
  • Materials must be placed in catalogue order in acid free curation boxes.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Two years of archaeological field and laboratory work and/or a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must have experience in archaeological field and laboratory work. Must have skills and abilities in managing and preparing collections in general. Need specific working knowledge of historic New England archaeological sites and artifacts. Basic knowledge of Microsoft programs, especially Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Field and lab experience in New Hampshire historic archaeology
