Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Work Assistant within the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

Directly under the supervision of the White Laboratory, the Work Assistant will perform supervised research in the area of cancer metabolism. The goal of the summer program is to inspire, motivate and educate the student through mentored cancer research training, co-curricular support, and professional development activities. The Work Assistant will engage in research and program related activities focusing on cancer under the supervision of the Program Director/Research Mentors. Additionally, the Work Assistant will learn valuable research skills (experimental, and laboratory techniques) as well as professional career development skills under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator/Research Mentor.

Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Receives hands-on training in cutting-edge cancer research.
  • Conducts research in mentor-supervised laboratories in summer.
  • Participates in educational seminars as available.
  • Receives compensation for their time.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, lectures and career development activities as available.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Must be a current college student who wishes to prepare for a STEM career, preferably in biomedical cancer research. For undergraduate students, enrollment as an undergraduate major in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with coursework in biology, genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology is highly desirable.

To be eligible a student must be:

  • Highly motivated and academically able to pursue a career in biomedical/cancer science
  • Requires the performance of laboratory research
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective oral and communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
  • No special vision requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases.
  • Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
