Santa Barbara Infrared, Inc. (SBIR) is recruiting for the position of Senior Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Systems Engineer. As a member of SBIR's Systems Engineering Group and reporting to SBIR's CTO, the Senior EO/IR Systems Engineer's primary responsibility will be to define, design, and analyze electro-optical test systems as part of SBIR's core product development (Infrared Scene Projectors, Standard Commercial Products, and Integrated Electro-Optical Test Systems). The Senior EO/IR Systems Engineering will also support product integration, characterization, and verification and validation.

$170,000/yr. - $195,000/yr. -- DOE

Full-Time, M-F

Requirements/Experience:

Required:

  • BS/BA in physics, engineering, or other relevant technical degree
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in electro-optics, infrared systems, or a related field. An advanced degree may count towards years of experience.
  • A solid foundation in the principles of optics, sensors, and EO/IR sensing systems with application to ground, air, or space systems
  • Experience with physical modeling, simulation, and analysis
  • Systems engineering experience on EO/IR system hardware development efforts in one or more of the following areas: establishing, maintaining, and flowing down requirements; leading and executing trade studies; failure mode and root cause and corrective action analysis; product lifecycle support; test plan and procedure development.
  • Laboratory experience with optical systems test, optical test equipment, and optical test components for active and/or passive optical systems
  • Experience developing optical error budgets
  • Ability to set priorities and organize incoming projects
  • Ability to communicate system requirements, testing needs, debug information, and design concepts with other engineering disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, and a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate with vendors and customer teams and demonstrate system performance through leading or supporting factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Ability to travel to customer facilities (5-15%)

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in physics, engineering, or other relevant technical degree
  • Technical leadership experience, including high-level project planning, technical mentorship, and supporting technical roadmap development
  • Experience and/or expertise in opto-mechanical design, analysis (STOP analysis), and tolerancing
  • Experience and/or expertise with EO/IR technology, imaging, radiometry, and calibration techniques.
  • Proficiency with C-based (C/C++), MATLAB, and/or Python programming languages
  • Proficiency with image processing and/or image analysis software
  • Experience and/or expertise with optical design and simulation analysis tools (Zemax or equivalent)
  • Experience and/or expertise of MEMS and/or photolithography fabrication processes and packaging of integrated circuits (ICs)
  • Experience and/or expertise with electronics, including ICs, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and high-throughput data transfer
