State House/Politics Editor

Ohio politics are never boring. At cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, we have no shortage of stories to tell. We are seeking a political editor with a proven record of breaking news and producing enterprise that illuminates issues and drives change. The right candidate can break down complex state-level politics and help reporters explain why the latest bill matters to readers and what a Supreme Court decision means.

We don't want equivocating he-said, she-said stories. We're digging for the truth in a supermajority state legislature where pay-to-play is a constant concern.

You could be based in Cleveland or Columbus and would manage a Washington DC reporter, chief political writer, education reporter and two government reporters, in both Columbus and Cleveland.

The base salary range is $70,000 - 85,000 per year.

You should apply to be our State House/Politics Editor if you:

  • Are passionate about politics
  • Are not afraid to ask tough questions and hold government officials accountable
  • Want to break news
  • Can translate the minutiae of a budget into digestible, impactful stories
  • Can work with efficiency, creativity, accuracy, and good judgment
  • Can collaborate with other editors to develop your own story ideas, as well as assignments

Ideal candidate will bring the following knowledge and skills:

  • Degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • 5 years+ journalism experience with proven ability in reporting, writing and editing.
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics, and story structure
  • This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources and cover events.
