WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

La Joya ISD seeks a proactive, mission-driven leader to serve as the Manager of Maintenance and Operations. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge, excellent planning skills, and a collaborative spirit to manage the daily upkeep and long-term planning of district facilities. This role demands someone who values high standards, accountability, and customer service.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Understands the complexities of maintaining and operating a large public school district with aging infrastructure and high expectations for safety and cleanliness
  • Has a strong background in mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and general facilities systems, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams
  • Uses data and work order systems to monitor performance, prioritize needs, and optimize workflows
  • Can lead preventive maintenance schedules, emergency responses, and capital improvement projects with a sense of urgency
  • Works collaboratively with principals, custodial supervisors, transportation staff, and central office leaders to ensure responsive service delivery
  • Respects the community’s investment in our schools and is committed to maintaining facilities that reflect pride, professionalism, and student-centered care

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • Certifications required

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities or operations management
  • Supervisory experience in a school district, municipality, or public organization preferred

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of facility systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, energy controls, etc.)
  • Experience with work order systems and preventive maintenance programs
  • Knowledge of Texas building codes, OSHA regulations, and school safety guidelines
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Maintenance and Facility Oversight

  • Oversee daily operations of district maintenance services, ensuring all facilities are functioning safely and efficiently
  • Monitor work orders using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and ensure timely response and closure
  • Inspect campuses and buildings regularly and coordinate preventive maintenance schedules

Team and Personnel Management

  • Directly supervise skilled trades workers, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and custodial supervisors
  • Assign and review work orders, ensuring quality standards are met
  • Provide ongoing professional development, safety training, and evaluation for staff
  • Coordinate schedules and on-call rotations for emergency response

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure all maintenance practices comply with local, state, and federal codes
  • Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, repairs, and regulatory compliance
  • Support emergency preparedness and disaster response planning for facilities

Operational Budget and Project Management

  • Assist with the development of the maintenance and operations department budget
  • Review quotes and coordinate procurement of supplies and contract services
  • Support project oversight for renovations, capital improvement projects, and vendor-managed work

Districtwide Support

  • Partner with custodial supervisors and transportation services to align district operations
  • Collaborate with campus principals and central office departments to respond to facility needs and concerns
  • Support energy conservation initiatives and facility modernization efforts

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Superintendent
  • Serve on district emergency response teams and assist in storm, utility, and crisis recovery operations

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise maintenance technicians, HVAC specialists, electricians, plumbers, custodial leaders, and related operations personnel. Responsible for hiring, evaluation, coaching, and discipline in alignment with district HR practices.
