Job Summary
RIT’s Facilities Management Services department is looking for a dynamic Operating Engineer I to join the FMS Engineering Services team. The FMS Engineering Services team is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of large capital equipment for the Central Heating and Cooling Plants, all secondary HVAC/R equipment, and campus infrastructure systems. Main equipment includes 45 MMBTU Medium Temperature Hot Water boilers, 2550 ton chillers, cooling towers and associated water treatment, compressors, pumps, fans, terminal units, main Air Handling Units, etc.
The Operating Engineer I provides the initial FMS response to off-hour urgent issues (contain and/or resolve heating/cooling calls, water and natural gas leaks, elevator malfunctions, electrical power outages, and other situations) as presented by Public Safety, FMS, or other sources. This position has leadership and management responsibilities including the authorization of calling in additional personnel, notification of FMS leadership, and direction of FMS staff to manage and resolve urgent situations; is expected to have knowledge of the campus, campus infrastructure, and building systems to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the campus and resolution of urgent situations; is required to make sound and independent decisions in the resolution of urgent issues to ensure the safety of the community and the operation of the university; and functions with limited supervision.
