Merom Generating Station is a 2-Unit, 1080-MW rated coal-fired power plant. The Material Handler performs assigned projects, procedures, or tasks, at a level of independent expertise, involving the transfer and storage of coal, limestone, solid waste, ash, or other bulk materials/by-products to maximize the production of electricity, with emphasis on safety and efficiency. Participates in on-the-job training or other educational opportunities to achieve a level of independent expertise concerning abnormal conditions and/or higher levels of operational skills, associated with CAMS material handling equipment and facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a level of competence and performs as a lead operator of the rotary car dumper or of the locomotive switch engine when assigned. Guides the activities of other material handlers, who have been assigned as assistants.
  • Maintains a level of independent expertise and to operate, as assigned any of the pieces of equipment or machinery associated with material handling, to include the following: Locomotive; Rotary car dumper; Bulldozer; End loader; Grader; Cherry picker and cranes; Compactor; Earthmover; Other associated material handling mobile equipment.
  • Maintains knowledge about the physical properties and behavior of the various materials and keeps abreast of developments or techniques regarding material handling systems and equipment.
  • Ensures the proper utilization, maintenance, and security of assigned tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
  • Maintains a log of daily inspections of assigned equipment and reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor(s) in a responsible and timely fashion.
  • Reviews with and provides appropriate input to the Material Handling Supervisor, any recommendations about practices, procedures, or system requirements to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long-range plans, and other efficiencies or cost improvements.
  • Participates in on-the-job training or other educational opportunities to achieve a level of independent expertise concerning abnormal conditions and/or higher levels of operational skills associated with Hoosier Energy’s material handling equipment and facilities. Provides the appropriate on-the-job training and guidance of personnel of lesser classifications or experience, to upgrade their material handling techniques, and to enhance the possibilities for greater responsibility and utilization of their skills.
  • Acts in an exemplary manner to maintain and promote safe practices and procedures and to participate in scheduled safety meetings and first aid classes. Tags equipment in a safe manner that follows the Merom Generating Station Clearance Permit System’s policy and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships

Internal Relationships:

  • Obtains equipment clearances, exchanges information, and collaborates on joint projects with operations personnel.
  • Exchanges information and collaborates on joint projects with maintenance and engineering personnel.
  • Obtains and retires equipment and tools with storeroom personnel.
  • Makes recommendations about training needs to safety coordinator.

External Relationships:

  • Exchanges information with Fuels department
  • Assists manufacturers’ representatives in installation or repair, receives training and exchanges information

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 4 years of bulk material handing experience with an electric utility and a demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment. Successful completion of the company material handling training program.
  • High school Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Broad knowledge of operations and maintenance of mobile heavy equipment, to include locomotive switch engine and rotary car dumper, and physical properties and behavior of bulk materials.
  • Must be capable of climbing in and out of heavy equipment at various locations and traversing irregular terrain.
  • Must be capable of traversing elevated conveyor walkways and confined areas.
  • Must be able to climb and walk extensively .
  • Must qualify for and maintain the appropriate driver's license to operate vehicles specified by the company.
