Job Information

Open to the general public and any current municipal employee.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) - Technicians, Local 1547 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1547.

DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation

HOURS OF WORK: Shifts vary; Schedule based on seniority: 40 hours per week within Monday - Sunday.

LOCATION: 3701 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue

Example of Duties

Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, lubrication, servicing and minor repairs on Public Transportation Department buses and other staff vehicles and equipment within prescribed intervals. Creates work orders in maintenance management system for all tasks and accurately enters time, parts, and materials used for each service. Applies strong attention to detail to ensure each vehicle is serviced thoroughly. Provide own standard tools of the trade; must establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and others to promote a safe, clean, and harmonious work environment. Cleans and maintains shop work areas. Must maintain regular time and attendance standards. Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalentand completion of an approved Journeyman Mechanic Apprenticeship Program.

OR

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalentand one(1) year of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

All applicants must possess and/or complete:

  • Valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction- Note: MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.
    • Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible
  • Valid State of Alaska OSHA forklift operator card at time of hire.

OR

  • At Time of Application- Valid State of Alaska Driver's License -Note: MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.
  • At Time of Hire- Valid State of Alaska Driver's License & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
  • Within First 120 Days of Employment– Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible
  • Valid State of Alaska OSHA forklift operator card at time of hire

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment, and a drug screen.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with unrestricted Passenger endorsement with no air brake restriction, or a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska Driver's License and State of Alaska Class B Commercial Learner's Permit. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible. Also, required is the submission of a current copy (dated within 30 days from date requested) of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
