BASIC FUNCTION

Primarily responsible for performing library automation system support duties, requiring decision making of a technical nature with minimum supervision. The position requires an understanding of library functions, automated systems used in libraries, databases, and technology generally used in schools in support of instructional programs. The Library Technician is the lead for the operation and maintenance of the District’s Integrated Library System (ILS) providing support and guidance to library staff in schools and works collaboratively as part of the Library Services Team as well as with the Instructional Resources Center (IRC).

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

  • Configures and provides implementation support of all modules of the District’s ILS. “E”
  • Troubleshoot issues with the ILS, analyzing issues in order to provide solutions ensuring the ongoing day-to-day operation of the ILS, in all PPS libraries; communicating with technical support representatives as needed. “E”
  • In coordination with the central teacher librarian, develops and coordinates training, providing both basic and ongoing training for all library staff in the use of all library systems and processes including the Integrated Library System Circulation, Catologing, and Textbook Management, as well as specialized trainings throughout the year. “E”
  • Provides on-going support, troubleshooting and follow up for library staff specific to the use of District Library systems in relationship to established library and textbook management practices. “E”
  • Support school library staff in conducting annual school library inventories. “E”
  • Works closely with the central Teacher Librarian to develop, maintain, and improve upon practices outlined in the online District Library Handbook. “E”
  • Participates with a team in the day-to-day work of the Library Services and Instructional Resources departments, including, but not limited to, circulating materials, shelving, processing new materials, inventory, keeping statistical information, etc. “E”
  • Maintains library web pages with resources for schools. “E”
  • Selects resources for and circulates District professional library materials and equipment. “E”
  • Provides quality control for standardized district library processes. “E”
  • Analyzes, and assists with creation of new library processes or updates of current processes to improve the use of the ILS. “E”
  • Supports the work of the central teacher librarian including the development and maintenance of District Library Collection Development Guidelines. “E”
  • Communicates with vendors and external stakeholders as needed. “E”
  • Works closely with the Instructional Resource Department to ensure Textbooks, Science Kits, and Multimedia Library resources are properly tracked, processed, and managed within the ILS. “E”
  • Provide support for District textbook adoptions including dissemination of information. “E”
  • Extracts and analyzes data from the DILS to help inform process improvement and policies.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops to improve and keep current on knowledge of library systems and other related library resources and tasks. “E”
  • Coordinate and attend department meetings and other staff meetings. “E”
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Computer technology systems and software.
  • Library automated cataloging.
  • Utilization of a variety of technology information resources and bibliographic utilities.

Ability to:

  • Use a variety of technologies and software programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, PeopleSoft, district payroll systems and other software programs.
  • Interpret and apply library procedures in making system-related and work-related decisions or providing information to others.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction as well as cooperatively with various internal/external customers.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines with competing priorities and changing workloads in an environment with constant interruptions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: An Associate’s Degree in library services or a related field is required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in computer science, information science, library services, or related field is preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in a Library technical services setting and expertise with the library system is required. Experience in a school library setting is preferred.

Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.

Compensation: Grade N - $34.27 - $46.32

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
