Position Purpose

Performs inspections, specialized maintenance and repairs, and constructs playground equipment and components. Ensures compliance with guidelines and requirements to assure safe and reliable playgrounds.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Playground Inspection

  • Assures compliance with entities such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission and National Recreation and Parks Association guidelines for playground safety.
  • Conducts detailed safety checks and on-going inspections of new installations, modifications, and existing playground equipment.
  • Develops and oversees the preventative maintenance schedule for playground equipment.

Playground Maintenance

  • Works independently and occasionally leads large scale projects, such as playground modifications and major component replacements, to completion.
  • Operates skid loader, backhoe, front­end loader, forklift and other heavy equipment, as needed.
  • Examines plans and specifications for new playground installations.
  • Performs repairs and maintains operational readiness of playground equipment.
  • Utilizes playground equipment manufacturer's recommendations and performs preventive maintenance on playground equipment and components.
  • Performs skilled labor tasks to maintain safety standards for playgrounds and equipment such as testing, adjusting, cleaning, and lubricating equipment and components.
  • Repairs playground equipment, components, and surfaces within scope of authority; replaces and adjusts worn and damaged mechanical parts and components; troubleshoots present and potential problems; researches and orders parts and supplies.
  • Identifies and reports mechanical problems which require additional repair.
  • Processes and completes work orders, including documentation of repairs, maintaining technical records, and tracking of labor and material use.

Safety

  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

  • Knowledge of proper use of tools of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures.
  • Knowledge of structural design, load bearing and structural capabilities of various construction materials, etc.
  • Knowledge of playground hazard identification and risk management methods.
  • Skill in navigating playground safety issues including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods.
  • Skill in coordinating, planning, organizing, leading, and completing projects.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, sketches and manuals.
  • Ability to lift materials and equipment normally used in the various trades.
  • Ability to work at various heights and perform various repairs without supervision.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to use software to access databases, email, create spreadsheets, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Welding tools; small hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment.
  • Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis.
  • Environment: Works outside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical (herbicides and fertilizer) and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress.
  • Special Requirements: Ability to respond to emergency work requests and to work overtime as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Certification/License:
    • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License required;
    • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required;
    • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification required within 180 days of start date.
  • Experience: 5 years’ experience in playground maintenance, welding, or a related field.
  • Language: Bilingual (English/Spanish) working proficiency preferred in some settings.

INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
  • Driving and accident record:

Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations http://dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/driverrecords.htm

  • NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
    • moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
    • failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or proof of insurance;
    • equipment violations.
  • NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
  • NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
  • NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
  • NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
  • NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
  • NO operating a vehicle without owner’s permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
  • NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
  • NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
  • Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD’s Fleet Insurance Carrier.
