The Data Scientist – Strategic Data Intelligence supports the development of analytical models, dashboards, and insights that inform key district decisions in areas such as attendance, student achievement, staffing, and equity. This role transforms complex data into meaningful stories using statistical techniques and visualization tools. The Data Scientist collaborates with senior analysts, engineers, and business leaders to generate insights from both instructional and operational data, playing a vital role in building a data-driven culture within Houston ISD.
1. Assist in developing predictive models and trend analyses that support planning and program evaluation.
2. Prepare data from Microsoft Fabric, SIS, ERP, and external systems for analysis.
3. Design Power BI dashboards that present key performance indicators and support data storytelling.
4. Clean, merge, and transform data for modeling and reporting purposes using statistical software.
5 Work with department leads to define research questions and translate them into analytical strategies.
6. Support pilot studies and evaluations of new academic or operational initiatives.
7. Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover patterns and actionable insights.
8. Document code, logic, and assumptions used in statistical work.
9. Stay informed on new methods, tools, and educational research practices.
10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, public policy, or a related field required. Master’s preferred.
Minimum of 3 years in applied data analytics, educational research, or statistical analysis. Prior work in public education, nonprofits, or social policy analytics a plus.

Works independently on defined tasks and applies analytical thinking to identify trends and anomalies.

Findings influence program evaluations, academic interventions, and resource allocations.
Collaborates with data engineers, academic teams, and decision-makers. Explains findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Builds positive relationships with internal stakeholders by delivering thoughtful, user-centered data solutions.
Office environment. Must balance multiple short- and long-term projects in a fast-paced setting, hybrid setting available.
