The Senior Engineer – Data Visualizations & Insights is responsible for leading the design and development of advanced, user-focused dashboards and reporting tools across HISD. This role transforms enterprise datasets into interactive visual products that inform decision-making in areas such as student performance, attendance, HR, procurement, and operations. The Senior Engineer serves as a technical leader, mentor, and subject matter expert in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric within the data visualization team.
1. Design and develop complex Power BI dashboards using best practices in layout, interactivity, and performance.
2. Build reusable datamarts, lakehouses and semantic models within Microsoft Fabric to support scalable report development.
3. Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into visual reporting solutions.
4. Guide dashboard development standards, templates, and version control procedures.
5 Optimize dashboards for performance, accessibility, and usability across user roles.
7. Integrate feedback loops and user testing into the dashboard development lifecycle.
8. Document business logic, DAX calculations, and metadata associated with each visual product.
9. Coordinate refresh schedules and monitor failures or performance issues.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, business analytics, or related field or equivalent work experience required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in BI development or analytics engineering. Public sector or education experience preferred.
Leads by example in technical execution, design quality, and solution delivery. Mentors and supports junior engineers.
Manages complex report development tasks and makes independent decisions on layout, structure, and logic implementation.
None. May advise on licenses, tools, or datasets.
Troubleshoots performance issues, incorrect data representations, and usability concerns. Proposes scalable solutions.
Impacts the accuracy and clarity of high-visibility reports used by principals, cabinet-level leaders, and the board.
Works closely with internal stakeholders to understand needs and present data clearly and meaningfully.
Delivers trusted visual tools that support decision-making and operational efficiency across the district.
Office setting. May require extended hours during high-stakes reporting cycles or product launches, hybrid setting available.
