Medical Technologists/MLS/CLS are responsible for performing the examination of materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information or materials for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease or the assessment of a medical condition. They perform laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital policies and departmental procedures. Medical Technologists function under the supervision of the medical laboratory director, manager, department supervisors or charge tech. They must be able to multi-task and even though they are assigned to sub-department of the laboratory they must float to areas as needed. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served; Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.
They will also be responsible for clerical duties including faxing, answering phones, running the tube system and working on the computer registering and ordering reference labs from other healthcare facilities whenever needed.
They are ultimately responsible to assure specimen collection, quality and timely test resulting and pending resolution. This may involve venipuncture, specimen pick-up, labeling and/or Blood Bank armbands when requested.
Must have good communication skills when dealing with patients and/or visitors and must show a caring and giving attitude and know that the care of the patient is the most important job. Must be able to work individually but also as a team with the non- technical staff with- in the lab and outside customers of the lab.
