Summary: The Grounds Foreman is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and care of all district grounds, including lawn care, irrigation systems, snow removal, athletic field turf management, and fertilization programs. This position ensures that all outdoor areas are safe, aesthetically maintained, and meet the functional needs of school operations and athletic programs. The Grounds Foreman supervises grounds staff and collaborates with vendors and other departments to maintain a high standard of service and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and schedule all groundskeeping operations including mowing, trimming, edging, and general landscaping across district properties.
- Manage the installation, repair, and seasonal maintenance of irrigation systems to ensure efficient water usage and landscape health.
- Develop and implement turf management plans for athletic fields, including aeration, seeding, topdressing, and field lining to support safe and high-performance play surfaces.
- Coordinate and supervise fertilization and weed control programs, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Direct and participate in snow removal operations, including plowing, salting, and de-icing of sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots for safe access during inclement weather.
- Supervise and evaluate grounds crew staff, providing training, assigning tasks, and monitoring job performance to ensure quality work and adherence to district standards.
- Inspect grounds regularly to identify areas needing attention and ensure timely completion of work orders and preventative maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records of materials, equipment maintenance, application schedules, and safety protocols.
- Collaborate with the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Athletics Department to support event preparation and field use scheduling.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, environmental, and operational guidelines, including pesticide application and equipment use.
- Maintain and coordinate repairs for grounds equipment and vehicles, ensuring operational readiness and safety.
- Assist in developing and managing the grounds maintenance budget, including inventory management and purchasing of supplies and materials.
- Coordinate with athletic directors and athletic coordinators to ensure athletic field and facility expectations are met.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional coursework or certifications in horticulture, turf management, or a related field preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in grounds maintenance is required, including at least two years in a supervisory or leadership role. The candidate should possess strong knowledge of turf care, irrigation systems, fertilization schedules, pest control, and snow removal practices. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of landscaping tools and equipment—such as mowers, tractors, and plows—is essential. This role requires the ability to manage multiple projects while effectively leading a team in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills are necessary. A valid driver’s license is required, along with the ability to obtain any necessary certifications, including pesticide application and safety training.

- Environmental Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions. Regular exposure to noise, dust, mechanical hazards, and cleaning or maintenance chemicals. May require evening or weekend hours as needed for emergencies or events.
