Job Description

The Associate Director of Compute and Data Infrastructure (CDI) at Syracuse University plays a critical role within Information Technology Services (ITS) in overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of the organization’s computing systems and infrastructure. The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient operation, scalability, and security of the technology infrastructure, contributing significantly to the achievement of the university’s objectives.

The Associate Director will provide leadership for virtualization, backup, off-site data protection, disaster recovery planning, and other infrastructure technologies. They will coordinate regular testing of recovery plans including working with all involved areas to allocate staff time, communicate the status of the testing effort to technical and non-technical constituents, produce a report, and make recommendations for improvement.

This role requires a strategic mindset, strong leadership skills, and a deep understanding of modern computing technologies and infrastructure management.

Education and Experience

  • The ideal candidate should have proven experience (typically 6+ years) in managing and leading compute and infrastructure teams in a complex hands-on IT environment.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Additional subject matter certification and/or degree desirable.
  • Experience in providing guidance and coordinating the efforts of staff members, operating large scale virtual environments, and development and testing of recovery processes for IT application and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Supports compute and data infrastructure, including oversight of core technical components. Technical areas of responsibility include in-depth infrastructure as a service (IAAS), backup and recovery technologies.
  • Monitors system performance, identifies potential issues, and implements proactive measures to prevent downtime and service disruptions.
  • Supervises and guides the infrastructure team, providing mentorship and support to ensure their professional growth and optimal performance.
  • Fosters a collaborative and innovative work environment that encourages knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Sets performance goals for the team, conducts regular evaluations, and provides feedback to enhance their productivity and effectiveness.
  • Evaluates the current infrastructure, identifies areas for improvement, and proposes innovative solutions to optimize performance and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Collaborating with other IT leaders, guides the development and execution of a long-term technology roadmap for infrastructure enhancement and growth.
  • Collaborates with external vendors and service providers to negotiate contracts, manage service level agreements, and ensure the delivery of high-quality services.
  • Evaluates and selects vendors for infrastructure-related projects, ensuring they meet the organization’s requirements and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
