Experiential Learning and Activities is seeking a Broadcast Adviser. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Broadcast Adviser for Orange Media Network (OMN), housed within the Experiential Learning & Activities (ELA) department, provides expert advising, training, and support to student producers of radio, television, video, and audio content. This role champions student learning, creativity, and autonomy while ensuring professional standards and ethical practices are upheld.

Orange Media Network exists to amplify student voices through hands-on media and leadership experiences that challenge perspectives and build community. The Adviser plays a critical role in preparing students for future careers by offering consistent coaching, developing technical skills, and integrating inclusive and equitable practices across all content creation.

The Adviser cultivates a collaborative, student-centered environment that encourages experimentation, growth, and accountability. This position requires a strategic and responsive leader who can balance student development, adapt to industry trends, and foster a culture of integrity, belonging, and excellence in college media.

Key Responsibilities

65% ADVISING, TRAINING, AND STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

  • Serve as the primary adviser to KBVR-FM Radio, KBVR-TV, Creative Video team and student engineers
  • Facilitate team meetings and 1:1 coaching sessions with student leaders
  • Advise and coach students while respecting and maintaining student editorial control.
  • Provide timely, in-person and/or written critiques of student produced content, with tools and recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop, plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive training program in video production, shooting video, editing, broadcast television production, radio, audio recording and editing, podcasting, media ethics and professional standards.
  • Coordinate guest speakers, field trips, and professional development opportunities
  • Ensure students follow the SPJ Code of Ethics and the College Media Association Code of Ethics and other standards of professional journalism and fiscal best practices.
  • Support student learning outcomes assessment, audience growth goals, and program impact metrics
  • Collaborate with students on annual planning, budgeting, and expense tracking
  • Guide students through contest selection, entry, and awards documentation

20% PROGRAM COORDINATION

  • Contribute to long-term strategies, goals, staffing plans, and funding for OMN and ELA.
  • Actively research media industry trends and integrate new strategies into student mediums and training
  • Serve as subject matter expert on broadcast, video and audio media
  • Track and report budgetary needs and issues to the Leadership Team and related budgeting boards. .
  • Foster a respectful and welcoming environment for all students through training, events, and content development
  • Work collaboratively and build reciprocal relationships with university colleagues, student organizations and community leaders to share information and develop new opportunities to enhance content and expand the delivery of programs, services, and resources to all students
  • Maintain active involvement with professional associations such as CMA, ACP, CBI, and BEA

15% ADDITIONALS DUTIES

  • Serve as chief operator for KBVR-FM which includes legal responsibilities for (1) following all rules and laws set by the FCC, RIAA, ADA, and other regulations and university policies as applicable; (2) ensuring station is FCC compliant; (3) managing FCC Public Inspection File; (4) coordinating renewal of FCC License; (5) logging EAS alerts and tests; and (6) maintaining and storing operator logs.
  • Manage facility/studio management, equipment (inventory, reserve/bulk), and emergency response.
  • Supervise engineering needs, including conducting regular equipment checks, tracking inventory, coordinating for support with campus partners, and making recommendations for repairs and replacements.
  • Represent OMN and ELA at university meetings, presentations, and divisional initiatives
  • Participate in division-wide staff development, retreats, and strategic workgroups
  • Complete other duties as assigned by leadership

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, electronic media, or other fields relevant to position duties.
  • Demonstrated experience using video and audio editing software.
  • Demonstrated experience with advising or supervising others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing access and inclusion in professional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, using initiative and judgment, in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing content in modern multimedia platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing multiple, competing priorities.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

  • 5+ years of full-time, professional broadcast media experience.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • Travel to and from meeting & event venues is required.
  • This position works in a work area that may include frequent interruptions and activity.
  • Often lift or carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds and pushing or pulling carts weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Evening hours required. Occasional weekend duties.
