The Fremont Energy Center is a 540 MW natural gas-fired generating station with a 2 x 1 configuration, offering operational flexibility and efficiency. Notably, it has 163 MW of duct-firing capacity, allowing for increased electricity production by utilizing exhaust heat from the gas turbines. Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Operator will support the efficient operation and maintenance of power plant systems, including auxiliary equipment, chemical systems, and rotating machinery. This role involves assisting in start-up, shutdown, and routine operations, performing emergency operations, and supporting maintenance activities to ensure safe and reliable plant performance. The Auxiliary Operator will also assist with Lockout/Tagout procedures, inventory management, and participate in safety and regulatory compliance programs to maintain optimal plant conditions.

Your scope of responsibility as Auxiliary Operator includes the following primary functions:

  • Perform work as assigned by the O&M Manager and seek direction from the Control Room Operator (CRO), Plant Operator, or Maintenance Technicians as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members to implement operational and chemistry-related changes.
  • Follow instructions from the CRO and Plant Operator to implement changes in plant operations and water chemistry.
  • Assist in the start-up, shutdown, and routine operation of power plant systems, ensuring all processes are conducted safely and efficiently.
  • Operate control panels to regulate load on the HRSG and turbines, maintaining proper steam temperature and pressure, feedwater and fuel supply, and efficient combustion conditions.
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor major auxiliary equipment—including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, and boiler feedwater and condensate systems—as well as locally controlled electrical and mechanical systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient performance.
  • Maintain operation of the chemical pumping system to ensure effective chemistry control and equipment reliability.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date operating logs in compliance with regulatory requirements, and issue or approve Tag Outs as needed.
  • Receive and respond to orders and requests from electrical and fuel dispatchers.
  • Report abnormal or irregular operating conditions to the CRO and take corrective actions in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform or support emergency operations and maintenance activities to maintain electrical service, ensure continued production, and protect facility equipment.
  • Assist the Maintenance Team with Lockout/Tagout procedures, equipment identification, troubleshooting, work request preparation, and other tasks to support safe and effective maintenance execution.
  • Perform or assist with mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical maintenance activities—including preventive, corrective, and planned maintenance—based on task complexity and plant needs.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, chemical systems, and water treatment systems, and assist with chemical handling and offloading activities.
  • Withdraw parts and supplies from inventory, complete usage reports in the inventory control system, and assist with physical inventory counts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the O&M Manager, CRO, or plant management to support safe and efficient plant operations.

Training and Certification Requirements

  • Complete Auxiliary Operator qualifications within 6 months of hire.
  • Complete Plant Operator qualifications within 1.5 years of hire.
  • Fulfill the requirements to be qualified as a Control Room Operator (CRO).

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Plant Operator reports to the O&M Manager and takes direction from the Control Room Operator and/or the Maintenance Technician depending on assigned duties. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Work Schedule

The Auxiliary Operator works a 12-hour modified Dupont schedule with varied day and night shifts. This position may require extended hours and flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on scheduling, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or "on-call" status may also be required.

Fit for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $32.50 to $45.58 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.

Essential Skills and Required Qualifications

We are seeking a skilled Operator with a foundation in power generation operations, along with a proven ability to support team success and consistently meet performance standards.

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school. An Associate degree in power plant technology, a related technical field, or engineering is preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a State of Ohio 3rd Class Stationary Engineer License is preferred. Alternatively, candidates must be able to obtain the license within 1.5 years of employment.
  • Proven track record in technician or operations roles within power generation, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining major auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, and associated electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Experience with water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and plant parameter inspection/recording is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency in mechanical systems, such as pumps, compressors, and turbines, is often required for maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.
  • Knowledge and a basic understanding of electrical systems, including high-voltage safety protocols and basic electrical theory.
  • Familiarity with piping and instrumentation schematics and process controls is beneficial, but not essential.
  • Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
