The TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) Program is seeking an Academic Counselor-Data Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position. This position will be located in Bend, Oregon.

The goal of the position is to improve the overall retention and graduation rates of program students, to serve as an important piece of the overall support net which the program provides its students, and to facilitate strong and positive relationships between TRIO SSS and all other constituents who work directly with students in the program.

Key Responsibilities

50% – Provide direct professional academic counseling to diverse population of students. Maintain complete records on the academic progress of each student; submit end-of-term summary for each student; coordinate as needed with advisors in each student’s major concerning progress toward degree.

20% – Data collection/coordination – update student lists/student numbers; track student grades and progress toward degree using the watchlist process; data base and CORE report support; program assessment and collection of data for annual performance report. Maintains student records according to federal guidelines. Assures confidentiality of records. Tracks student participation and notifies students if they are at risk of being “bumped” from the program for lack of program participation.

10% – Coordinates the TRIO SSS summer bridge program for incoming SSS participants during fall term, including development of intended outcomes and assessment plan, development of curriculum, development of housing plan and agreements/contracts with UHDS and recruiting student staff to help with the bridge program take place before classes begin.

5% – Assists in coordinating and organizing peer mentoring program events. Plans and coordinates cultural events, program activities and volunteer opportunities for program participants. Provide annual evaluations for each Peer Mentor.

5% – Coordinates the TRIO SSS technology check-out program by maintaining the database of technology rental and ensuring return of all technology from TRIO participants.

5% – Assist the TRIO SSS Director in admitting students into the program.

5% – Participate in academic counseling meetings as well as SSS staff meetings; report directly to SSS Director. Participate in collaborative programs and initiatives of the Division and expand and enhance cultural competency and diversity efforts in the program, the division, and the university. Other duties as assigned as assigned (i.e. input student documentation, support program outreach efforts, attend training when necessary)

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Student Services, or related field.
  • Experience meeting the educational needs of low-income, first generation students, individuals with disabilities, culturally diverse populations and students needing developmental education.
  • Commitment to a developmental philosophy and a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative academic counseling team.
  • An interest in helping others be successful in college.
  • Experience interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • The ability to arrange a schedule directly with students and manage one’s own schedule. Prior experience with college-level programs.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Background similar to that of program-eligible students (low income, first-generation, individual with a disability).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, OSU technology and Blumen.
  • An understanding of the TRIO programs student population (first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities).
  • Experience in peer leadership.
