Job Description

The University of Tennessee is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate in the area of cold spraying. The position will focus on experimental cold spray processing and characterization via techniques such as x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy and mechanical testing. Familiarity with residual stresses and other additive manufacturing and coating techniques are also beneficial. The candidate will be advised by Philip D. Rack at the University of Tennessee and scientists at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon the continued funding of the grant.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Learn cold newly acquired cold spray instrumentation.
  2. Develop appropriate protocols for characterizing the cold spray coating uniformity and properties.
  3. Write reports and deliver oral status updates.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field
  • Applicants can start the position if they have finished the PhD degree requirements, even if the degree has not been conferred.
  • Excellent written, as evidenced by a prolific publication record, and oral communication skills are necessary and the ability to work in a research team is preferred.
  • Importantly, the position requires a Q clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance is required.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.

Salary will be $84,000/year. Projected Start Date is 8/1/25.
