General Summary:
The principal responsibilities of the Mechanical Project Technician position are to execute assigned projects on a timely and efficient manner. The Mechanical Project Technician will make sure that all parties involved in the project are working together effectively to achieve their goals; following the instructions and best practices on executing planned projects and working closely with the team leader, plant engineer and contractors to maintain the accuracy of the project, drawings and plans.
The Mechanical Project Technician position is part of the Maintenance Team that supports the paper machine. In the event of a breakdown the Mechanical Project Technicians are required to repair all equipment effected if needed.
Education and/or Experience:
Post-secondary educational degree (2 year or relevant degree from college, university, technical-school, military, vocational or other advanced educational institution) along with 3 to 5 years of experience is required.
Salary Compensation
The Mechanical Project Technician will be Salaried Non-Exempt (Standard 40 hours and eligible for overtime after 40)
Starting base salary: $75,000 - $79,000 / year
INCENTIVE PLAN: Earn up to 33.3% of monthly base pay; paid out quarterly
Schedule
8 or 12 hour “day” Monday-Friday, occasional weekend rotating on-call coverage
It is expected that all of our Mechanical Technicians will fill-in on shift hours, as required.
Position Details
The candidate should be able to:
- apply safe working practices and understand the principles of preventive and first-line maintenance
- correctly diagnose a range of mechanical, hydraulic and/or pneumatic faults and plan a suitable course of action for replacement
- understand the principles of power transmission systems; recognize, remove and refit taper-lock bushes, keyed shafts, belts, chains & couplings; install & align shafts; tension drive train components
- pipe fabrication is a must (spool pieces, new installation of equipment, and repair)
- must be proficient in welding process (TIG or Stick, as appropriate)
- must be able to rig and move large equipment in tight areas (paper machine rolls, heavy equipment Etc.)
- must be proficient using cranes when applicable installation of new equipment throughout the mill at any given time
- correctly remove and refit various types of bearings (roller, ball, etc.) identify various bearing types, understand their typical applications & recognize common defects
- practice methods of removing broken studs (identify proper stud and bolt engagement)
- recognize stripped threads and correctly use thread repair equipment or equivalent.
- manufacture gaskets and understand how to remove and replace seals and gland packing
- understand the operation of various gearboxes, (helical, spur and worm-wheel)
- correctly dismantle and replace drive belts
- recognize various types of conveyor systems and their main components
- identify typical faults and correctly remove, replace and track a conveyor belt
The position is also responsible for the safe use of hoists, lift trucks, hand tools and power tools.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements:
- Practical application training may require some out-of-state travel to various other Pratt Paper Mills
- Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (glasses, ear plugs, shoes, gloves, etc…)
- Drug testing/Screening, Background Checks, Physical exam, and Reference Checks
- Demonstrates a proven record of learning aptitude
- Participate in ongoing educational certificate training program provided
- Assist with on the job training of current and new Mechanical Technicians
- Housekeeping, including washing up, sweeping, and shoveling debris
- Working knowledge of equipment design for process troubleshooting; strong problem-solving skills
- Must be able to read and understand blueprints, technical manuals, literature and work orders as well as prepare reports legibly
- Basic to intermediate math skills
- Complete work in a timely manner
- Be able to work alone as needed
- Perform other tasks as required by Mill Management
