THIS IS A NON-CAREER APPOINTMENT THAT IS LIMITED TO 129 HOURS PER MONTH

This position provides basic assistance to professional transportation planner staff in meeting responsibilities of the Statewide Planning Section (SPS). This includes a variety of baseline tasks related to assisting with the statewide and metropolitan planning processes and programs including Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), Regional Planning Agencies, Rural Task Force Program, Small Urban Program, Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, and Byways Program. Assists the transportation planning staff with the development of training materials for external and internal Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) customers. Runs and analyzes various reports from MDOT databases as requested. Other administrative activities as assigned.

This position also involves assisting senior staff in process improvement documentation and assistance in document production including the FY26 – 29 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, the Non-Metropolitan Rural Transportation Consultation Plan, Byways Program Statewide Guidelines, and Transportation Performance Measures.

Attends and participates in various in-person and Microsoft Teams meetings with external and internal customers as assigned.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Student Assistant position.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Current enrollment in vocational or technical school, or post-secondary educational institution.

Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration, Economics, Resource Development, Political Science, Geography, Communications, or other related field is preferred.

MDOT requires enrollment in at least 6 credit hours per semester/term excluding summers and continuously enrolled and earning the required credits.

Experience

No specific type or amount is required.

Additional Requirements and Information

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is preferred.
  • Submit proof of enrollment which includes unofficial transcripts, an acceptance letter from the college/university (as long as it is for the upcoming semester/term), copy of current semester/term schedule, or a receipt of tuition payment that shows a balance of $0.00. Failure to attach proof of enrollment may result in you being screened out of the process.
