FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY MED) is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY MED graduated its first MD class in 2020. In addition, the CUNY MED offers a two-year Physician Assistant (PA) program to prepare health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Our mission is 1) to provide access to medical education to talented youth from historically underrepresented in backgrounds in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities and 2) to perform innovative research in community health and biomedicine.

We seek to hire multiple health disparity senior faculty researchers at the Associate or Full Professor level. The hires will be part of either the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences (MCBS), Department of Medical Education (Med Ed) or the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM), depending on their research discipline.

The MCBS, Med Ed and CHASM departments play a critical role in our mission-driven BS/MD program, Physician Assistant program, and new Post Baccalaureate program through their teaching and research programs. The MCBS department is responsible for the basic science curriculum. Faculty members conduct extramurally funded research currently centered on neuroscience, microbiology and immunology, cardiovascular disease, and oncology. The CHASM department curricular responsibilities include providing a comprehensive effort to educate our students in the social, economic, political and, behavioral determinants of health and disease, with a focus on population health, health disparities and health care policy. CHASM’s current research agenda is centered on chronic disease epidemiology, health behavior, health policy, health services and, community-based research. The Medical Education department is responsible for providing a comprehensive effort to educate our students to apply foundational sciences and clinical principles of medical practice to provide cross-cutting care to produce supremely competent healthcare professionals that New York needs. Medical Education research focuses on developing an evidence-based pedagogy to deliver on mission. The school seeks to recruit and retain faculty who are clinician-scientists, and exceptional medical educators who have a track record of excellence across the school’s quadripartite mission as evidenced by external federal funding and peer-reviewed manuscripts.

The hired faculty member will have a national reputation for their scholarship. The faculty member will report to their respective departmental Chair and work collaboratively with CUNY MED instructional and research administration. The position includes teaching, research, and mentoring duties in their area of expertise and sharing responsibility for committee, program and, department assignments, which includes administrative, supervisory and other functions. In addition to the above details, the faculty hire’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Enhance institutional research capacity in translational health disparities research and enable research grant principal investigators to continue their competitive extramural support by studying health disparities across a spectrum of approaches, clinical trials, AI, and community-engaged research.
  • Maintaining an externally funded research program at the CUNY School of Medicine
  • Build research infrastructure for interdisciplinary programs focused on the social determinants of education.
  • Spearheads and promotes curricula infrastructure for Med Ed or CHASM as needed to train health professionals;
  • Participate in instruction of medical and/or PA students; through a combination of educational methodologies, including live presentations, video-streaming, and multimedia;
  • Actively promote a culture of health disparities research at CUNY MED by mentoring investigators, including those from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Makes presentations at national and international meetings and actively publish in rigorous peer-reviewed journals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Department Chairperson or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

MIMINUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD, ScD, and/or MD degree or equivalent at the time of appointment to the faculty.
  • Have a demonstrable track record of research productivity, as evidenced by commensurate and highly impactful publications;
  • Evidence of sustained record of external foundation, governmental/federal grant funding as PI;
  • A track record of mentoring students and junior faculty, and faculty development.
  • A national standing, as evidenced by invited speaking opportunities at conferences and symposia as well as articles published in high-impact journals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience and knowledge of Education and Health Care Disparities along the spectrum from basic to clinical sciences
  • Knowledge of AI and its role in medical education
  • Sophisticated knowledge of computational methodologies and sciences
  • Sophisticated experience in health services research and health, education and public policy
  • Knowledge of mixed methods and ability to incorporate them within research
  • Funded research programs that align with current strengths in the Med Ed, MCBS, and CHASM departments;
  • Distinguished as a teacher;
  • Experience with interprofessional education;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, to initiate and maintain effective working relationships
  • Experience and a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly and learning environment

COMPENSATION

Medical Professor (Clinical) - $140,087 - $207,923

Associate Medical Professor (Clinical) - $122,677 - $174,026

We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

(CURRENT CONTRACTUAL SALARY RANGE)

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
