General Statement

University Student Housing (USH) at MSU, offers a unique, on-campus living experience for students and their families as they focus on their academic success. Managing 18 active on-campus communities (Residence Halls and Apartments) which are the home of up to 6,500 residents. The departmental mission includes provision of reasonably priced living environments which are clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable, and include safety features; ensures the orderly and effective administration of the program through efficient management; and provides a learning environment and related co-curricular programs which promote maturity and academic success.

Duties and Responsibilities

Custodians provide cleaning and light maintenance services for the residence halls, student apartments, and associated areas. Custodians may work individually or on a team. This position is asked to interact in a professional and positive manner with students, tenants, and summer conferencing guests to accomplish the department mission and aid in retention. The primary emphasis is on:

  • Cleaning public areas which include restrooms, laundry areas, stairwells etc
  • Carpeted and hard-surface floor care
  • Trash removal
  • Set up and tear down of areas such as residence hall rooms/office spaces/public spaces dependent on department
  • Other related custodial duties
  • Actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  1. Experience working in custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, etc.
  2. Experience working effectively with minimal or no supervision.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  1. Experience providing excellent customer service.
  2. Experience operating floor scrubbers, extractors, or similar janitorial equipment.
  3. Certifications, classes completed, or knowledge of safety procedures utilized in a custodial, janitorial or housekeeping position.

  • This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Hours are available Monday – Friday for up to 16 hours/week.
    • Available shifts are:
      • 4 half-day shifts from 7am – 11am or 11:30am to 3:30pm
      • 2 full-day shifts from 7am – 3:30pm

  • Stationary or moving about for extended periods of time
  • Frequently moving, transporting and placing containers/objects up to 30 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs. (items may include stacking chairs, folding tables, floor sealer, bed frames, dressers, desks, etc.)
  • Moving up and down stairs occasionally while carrying containers/objects
  • Moving up and down a step ladder
  • Bending, kneeling, stretching and general moving about while stocking products
  • Gripping handles on equipment
  • Performing repetitive motions related to job duties
  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions
  • Occasionally shovel snow
