Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, five years of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, two of which were in a commercial/industrial setting, Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification, and possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain coverage under the University of South Alabama. Completion of an HVAC training program may substitute for two years of the required experience.

Job Description Summary

The University of South Alabama’s Central Utilities department is seeking to hire an HVAC Mechanic III. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and controls.
  • Maintains and operates electronic control systems, calibrates, repairs, and installs components of building control management systems.
  • Reading blue prints and schematics to determine location, size, capacity, and type of component needed to repair equipment and/or systems.
  • Maintains and operates electronic controls systems for HVAC equipment (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) and refrigeration.
  • Inspects and tests building control management systems for proper operation.
  • Responds to problems with HVAC systems by troubleshooting and taking appropriate action to correct.
  • Maintains controls for distribution systems of high temperature hot water, natural gas, and domestic water.
  • Checks, modifies, repairs, tests, and troubleshoots the Johnson Controls building control management system.
  • Transports tools and materials to various work sites using a University vehicle.
  • Moves items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Climbs ladders to access work areas.
  • Works in closed areas of extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
  • Related duties as required.
