UPMC Procirca is looking for an ECMO Coordinator to lead their dedicated team at Pinnacle Hospital in Harrisburg, PA

The ECMO Coordinator, having been appropriately trained to manage extracorporeal systems and under the direction of a prescribing physician, will perform direct patient care through the implementation, operation and management of the ECMO system. The coordinator will ensure the safe and effective operation of the equipment by performing routine assessments, interventions and practices as described in the ECLS practice guidelines. Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care plans to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources. Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychological support needs. Evaluates learning needs of patient and family and provides education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances. The work area is primarily the operating room and ICU but the possibility exists for working throughout the hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate the application of clinical perfusion skills by adhering to departmental and professional standards.
  • Travel as needed to complete core responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with the perfusion director, CCM charge physician, and CTICU nurse manager to assure appropriate staffing.
  • Maintain continuing education, ABCP certification and PA perfusion license. Maintain optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with attending physicians.
  • Maintain proficiency with various perfusion techniques to include hemodilution, hemofiltration, hypothermia, hyperthermia, blood management, myocardial preservation, and liver bypass. Responsible for administration of medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit in consultation with or under the direction of the attending physician.
  • Maintain competency/proficiency with laboratory equipment and processes. Understand and implement specific regulatory requirements and quality assurance practices.
  • Provide support of ECMO patient transport via ground and (or) air transport.
  • Participate in research and formal presentations. Participate with the submission of one scientific abstract per year.
  • Provides supervision and guidance to the members of the ECMO team.
  • Maintains ECMO equipment and supplies.
  • Participate on one committee with the focus of patient care.
  • Support Procirca contractual obligations by contributing to the successful execution of services.
  • Promotes the continuing education and skill maintenance of the ECMO team.
  • Assures submission of appropriate information for successful billing.
  • Participates in direct patient care 50% of work time. Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that is age and developmental need specific.
  • Provides oversight of the ECMO quality management program by reviewing charts and evaluating outcomes.
  • Demonstrates effective instruction and supervision of students by adhering to the clinical objectives of the UPMC School of Perfusion.
  • Orients new members of the ECMO team, assuring their competence.
  • Facilitate periodic meetings for the ECMO team members.
  • Maintains all ECMO policies and procedures by adherence to organizational, departmental and outside regulatory requirements; and by monitoring operational and clinical outcomes.
  • Collaborate with leadership on the preparation and delivery of ECMO training programs at UPMC and external sites.
  • Serves as liaison to all UPMC and outside referral ECMO sites.
  • Participate on the call schedule for ECMO specific coverage.
  • Serve as a role model of excellent clinical quality and customer service.
  • Maintain appropriate, timely, and accurate documentation.
  • Registered Nurse, ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist with PA State Licensure, OR a Registered Respiratory Therapist with minimum of 6 years of clinical experience, of which 4 or more years' is in ECMO care, demonstrating advanced knowledge and proficiency.
  • General computer skills to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database management.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong and effective interpersonal, written, and oral communications.
  • Completion of an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) qualified program (or equivalent).
  • Successful completion of adult or pediatric ECMO certification exam through AmSECT or ELSO if not a ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist with PA State licensure.

Pediatric (CES-P) AmSECT if not an American Board Cardiovascular Perfusionist (CCP) with PA State Licensure (LP)Current Pennsylvania driver's license.

  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
