What is Specialized Recreation?

Specialized Recreation is a program that facilitates a variety of fun, exciting, and safe social and recreational activities for people with disabilities in our community. How to be Successful in This Role

Are you someone who loves working with people and creating meaningful experiences? If so, this could be a rewarding opportunity to support youth and young adults with disabilities at Camp Lots of Fun in Tacoma.

We’re looking for compassionate, enthusiastic individuals who thrive in active environments and enjoy helping others. In this role, you’ll help lead and support campers ages 5–22 through daily activities, providing encouragement, structure, and fun. Experience working with individuals with disabilities is a plus, and your ability to problem-solve, stay organized, and work collaboratively with others will be essential to your success. A positive attitude, flexibility, and a genuine desire to make a difference are must-haves!

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and assist campers with daily camp activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the camp director or recreation coordinator
  • Required to drive a 12-passenger minibus and provide DOL driving abstract
  • Participate in staff meetings/training

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED, minimum 18 years of age
  • Active or previous participation in an art instruction setting (experience can be through school, camps, childcare, or volunteering)
  • Must have a current CPR/First Aid certification required within 30 days of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active or previous participation in a recreation programming setting is preferred (experience can be through school, camps, childcare or volunteering)
  • Work or volunteer experience with individuals with disabilities is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with people with disabilities in a recreational and/or work setting
  • Knowledge and experience working with people of all ages with various needs
  • Ability to problem solve, work with the public in a tactful manner, and possess organizational skills while remaining flexible
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment to ensure safety and enjoyment by program participants; lead both large and small group activities; maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, and volunteers; follow written and oral directions.

Our benefits:

Sick Leave

Extra hires are eligible to receive sick leave in accordance with the WA State Minimum Wage Act. Extra hires are not eligible for other County benefits.

Social Security

All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Pro-tem Judges in District Court, Pro-tem Superior Court Commissioners, Extra Hires with Retirement, and Work Study Students with Retirement are eligible for Retirement and Deferred Compensation and Social Security.

Pierce County employees are members of the State of Washington's Department of Retirement System (DRS) and depending on the position or previous DRS enrollment may be able to enroll in one of many programs DRS offers.
