Position Information

TxDOT's Tyler District - Central Project Development Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer Tech I, II, or III. Transportation Engineer Tech I (A13): $35,439 - $52,388

Transportation Engineer Tech II (A15): $38,976 - $58,045

Position Description

The Transportation Engineer Tech I performs basic drafting, calculations and field work; learns basic design procedures and techniques. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

The Transportation Engineer Tech II performs intermediate drafting and calculations and basic design work; performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

The Transportation Engineer Tech III performs advanced drafting and calculations and intermediate design work; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech I include:

  • Assists in preparation of quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps
  • Assists in preparation of roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, equipment and building plans
  • Learns to use automated roadway programs, hydraulic design programs and/or interactive graphics
  • Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities, copies detailed plans and drawings
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Works on reproduction of plans.
  • Files and makes copies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech II include all of the above and:

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Learns to write general notes and special provisions on specifications.
  • Performs basic design work.
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments. -
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.

The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech III include all of the above and:

  • Learns additional automated design methods or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal/lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
  • Performs intermediate design work
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required.

Transportation Engineer Tech II: 3 years drafting, design, plan preparation.

Transportation Engineer Tech III: 4 years drafting, design, plan preparation.

(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical

training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

The required competencies for the Transportation Engineer Tech I include:

  • Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
  • Interactive graphic and design information systems
  • Writing and revising standards and procedures

The required competencies for the Transportation Engineer Tech III include all of the above and:

  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
  • Performing advanced drafting

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
